Bunting and Smith face important evening tests
European Championship qualification gives Saturday’s action an extra edge, with Maastricht the final opportunity to earn a place in Dortmund.
Bunting entered the tournament occupying the final qualifying position. His opening opponent is now confirmed as Menzies, who beat Nick Kenny 6–1 on Friday.
Smith also remains part of the qualification picture, with Aspinall standing between him and the last 16. Our look at Bunting and Smith’s routes through the draw explains why their results carry significance beyond this weekend’s title.
The top 32 in the European Tour rankings after Maastricht qualify for the European Championship. Winning a second-round match should therefore not automatically be treated as confirmation of a Dortmund place: other results can still matter.
Friday’s winners bring momentum into round two
Ryan Joyce delivered a 6–0 win over Owen Bates to set up his afternoon meeting with Ross Smith, while Dirk van Duijvenbode beat James Hurrell 6–1 before facing Ryan Searle.
Host-nation qualifier Heine Uuldriks edged Ricardo Pietreczko 6–5 and now meets Brendan Dolan. Dave Chisnall’s 6–4 victory over Jonas Masalin earned him a match against Danny Noppert.
Those results are recorded in the PDPA’s tournament coverage.
Sebastian Bialecki also progressed, with his 6–4 victory over Daryl Gurney setting up an evening meeting with Gian van Veen.
