Arsenal vs Slavia Prague score: Madueke and Gyökeres build a 2-0 lead
Mikel Arteta’s side made six changes from Sunday’s 1-0 win over Liverpool, the result that put them three points clear in the Premier League. Our Liverpool vs Arsenal page covers that fixture.
The opening goal came from a long ball by David Raya that Slavia allowed to bounce. Gyökeres won the ball, chested it down and played Madueke through, and the England winger finished between goalkeeper Nazar Domchak’s legs.
Gyökeres then exchanged passes with Merino inside the area and curled a finish in off the far post. It was his first Champions League goal from open play since the game against Kairat Almaty in January, according to The Independent.
The visitors had further chances before the break. Merino headed over from a Gyökeres knockdown, and Gabriel Magalhães had a header cleared off the line.
A rare start that changed the mood
The Sweden forward was making only his sixth start of the season. He finished last season as the club’s top scorer with 21 goals, but his only previous goal this campaign came in the Carabao Cup defeat at Fleetwood Town, covered in our fleetwood vs arsenal guide.
The assist for Madueke was his third in his last five appearances, according to The Guardian’s match report. The 28-year-old led the line for the third time in the past four matches.
Kai Havertz remains Arteta’s first-choice striker, so a Gyökeres performance of this kind adds options rather than settling selection. Martín Zubimendi made only his third start of the season, while Martin Ødegaard and William Saliba, back from a long-term back injury, were on the bench.
Slavia Prague fight back as Arsenal are pushed late on
Slavia had one shot before half-time and 17 in the second half, according to Sky Sports. They switched from a back four to a back three and brought on record signing Ange N’Guessan, and the visitors struggled to recover their first-half rhythm.
Gabriel cleared two headers off the line from a corner in the final 20 minutes. Raya then pushed an Oskar Kubiak header onto the post in the 83rd minute with a full-stretch save.
Ezri Konsa and Declan Rice were both booked. Nowak’s goal arrived in the 90th minute, and Stepan Chaloupek headed wide in the fourth minute of added time.
Before the match, Arteta had described the opposition in strong terms. “It’s a really good team that are extremely well coached,” he said, speaking in Arsenal’s official match preview about last season’s meeting in Prague. Our Slavia Prague vs Arsenal preview covered the team news and likely line-ups.
What does the result mean for Arsenal and Slavia Prague?
Arsenal are now unbeaten in their last 10 away European matches. They have not lost an away game in Europe since the second leg of their semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain in May 2025, and they drew 2-2 at Bayern Munich two weeks ago.
For Slavia the defeat extends a winless run in the competition to 23 matches, equalling the record held by AEK Athens and FCSB, formerly Steaua Bucharest. Their only Champions League win came in their first match in 2007.
Slavia coach Jindrich Trpisovsky had spoken about that run beforehand. “The longer it gets, the more unpleasant it is,” he said, also in the Arsenal preview.
Arsenal go into the next round of European fixtures in third place in the league phase. More club and league coverage is available in our Premier League news section.
