He said he felt his place at the Players Championship Finals was already safe, so he decided to try them. “I’m just delighted to get another win after recent performances on TV. I’ve had a few struggles, but the doubles were on form today,” he said.

“I know what I’ve got to defend at the World Championship, so I’m looking to dig deep and hopefully get up them rankings again.” He added that he has only one set and asked Target to make more.

Tommy Morris reaches first ranking final

Morris, 34, does not hold a Tour Card and plays on the Challenge Tour. He was bidding to become the sixth player without a Tour Card to win a Pro Tour event, after Joe Murnan, Ratajski, Scott Williams, Wesley Plaisier and Henry Coates.

On his way to his first PDC ranking final he beat Mervyn King, Kim Huybrechts, Michael van Gerwen, Charlie Manby, Michael Smith and Williams, the last of them 7-3 in the semi-finals.

The run all but secures his debut at next month’s Players Championship Finals. He has already qualified for the Paddy Power World Darts Championship through the 2026 Challenge Tour Order of Merit.
