Charlie Manby won his first PDC ranking title and secured a Grand Slam of Darts debut after beating Maik Kuivenhoven 8-2 in the Players Championship 31 final.

The 21-year-old from Huddersfield collected the £15,000 winner’s prize in Den Bosch on Wednesday, turning his first run beyond a ranking quarter-final into a tournament victory.

Manby defeated Beau Greaves in the semi-finals before taking control of the final, adding another milestone to the World Championship breakthrough that brought him wider attention last December.

How Charlie Manby won Players Championship 31

Manby opened with a 6-1 victory over Karel Sedláček, averaging 104, before edging past Dennie Olde Kalter 6-5.

A 6-4 win over Adam Leek followed. He then produced a 112.16 average in a 6-3 win over Dominik Gruellich, finishing the last four legs of that match in 12 darts apiece, LiveDarts reported.

His quarter-final against Alan Soutar required another recovery. Trailing 3-0, Manby won six consecutive legs to reach the last four.

Greaves pushed him harder in the semi-final, but he came through 7-5 to set up a meeting with Kuivenhoven.

Manby raced into a 5-0 lead in the final. Kuivenhoven took the next two legs, but the Englishman closed out the match with three successive legs to secure the trophy, as RTÉ reported.

Grand Slam qualification adds to breakthrough

The victory also confirmed Manby’s place at the Grand Slam of Darts. The Grand Slam of Darts takes place in Wolverhampton from 14 to 22 November, with coverage on Sky Sports.

“It’s absolutely amazing. I’m literally lost for words here,” Manby told Sky Sports.

He admitted feeling nervous when Greaves fought back in their semi-final. The Grand Slam place was particularly welcome after he had missed an opportunity to qualify through the World Youth Championship.

From Alexandra Palace breakthrough to a ranking title

Manby was 20 when he beat Cameron Menzies 3-2 on his World Championship debut last December. Menzies subsequently apologised after punching the stage table following the defeat.

That separate incident is covered in the background to our Cameron Menzies report.

Now 21, Manby has followed his Alexandra Palace breakthrough with a ranking trophy and another major tournament appearance to look forward to.

Players Championship 32 follows in Den Bosch on Thursday 29 October, with play scheduled from noon GMT. See our Players Championship 31 and 32 guide for viewing details and tournament updates.
