Osleys Iglesias has won all 15 of his professional fights, stopped 14 opponents and already secured the IBF super-middleweight title.

On Thursday, the Cuban makes his first defence of that belt against unbeaten Danish challenger Oliver Zaren in Quebec City.

For viewers discovering Iglesias through this fight, his record provides an obvious introduction. The more revealing detail is how he reached this point: successive stoppages against Vladimir Shishkin and Pavel Silyagin took him from contender to champion.

Now comes the task of establishing a sustained reign in the 168lb division.

Who is Osleys Iglesias?

Iglesias is a Cuban southpaw who holds the IBF and IBO super-middleweight titles.

His professional record stands at 15 wins without defeat, with 14 victories coming inside the distance. That gives him a stoppage rate of approximately 93%.

Those numbers explain the interest around him, but a knockout percentage alone cannot establish where a boxer belongs among the best in his division.

The quality of the opposition and the circumstances of those victories matter. Iglesias’ recent results offer more useful evidence than the percentage in isolation.

Shishkin took him into the eighth round before being stopped. Silyagin also reached the end of the eighth before his corner brought their contest to a halt.

Both results showed that Iglesias’ threat can remain significant beyond the opening exchanges.

How did Iglesias become world champion?

Iglesias won the vacant IBF title against Silyagin in Montreal on 9 April.

The Ring’s report of the fight described an early right uppercut that hurt the Russian and a contest in which Iglesias continued to land the more damaging punches.

Silyagin attempted to disrupt him through movement and clinching, but his corner stopped the fight after eight rounds.

That is relevant to the challenge awaiting Zaren. Surviving Iglesias’ initial pressure does not, by itself, provide a route to victory.

A challenger must also find a way to score, interrupt his rhythm and prevent him from settling into repeated attacks. Simply extending the contest leaves the champion with further opportunities to land.

Who is Oliver Zaren?

Zaren enters with 19 wins and one draw, including eight stoppages.

The Danish challenger is trained by former world champion Mikkel Kessler, according to the promoter’s event information.

His unbeaten record includes an unusual result. His June contest with Jose Luis Navarro Jr in Madrid ended in a technical draw after a thunderstorm interrupted the outdoor event.

That outcome offers little guidance on how he will handle Iglesias.

The practical challenge is substantial: Zaren must create enough attacking opportunities to win rounds while limiting exchanges in which the champion can impose his power.

Kessler’s experience provides a valuable resource in preparation. Once the bell sounds, Zaren must make those decisions himself.

What would another win mean for Iglesias?

A successful first IBF defence would preserve Iglesias’ unbeaten record and give him another result on which to build his championship reign.

The manner of the performance will also matter.

An early finish would reinforce his reputation for power. A longer contest could reveal more about his ability to adjust when an opponent changes tactics or refuses to give ground.

Neither outcome should be judged purely by the number of rounds. Control, accuracy and the ability to respond to resistance offer a fuller picture.

For Iglesias, the immediate objective is straightforward: retain his titles against another unbeaten opponent.
