Canelo Alvarez’s next fight is still on: he faces Christian Mbilli for the WBC super-middleweight title in Riyadh on Saturday, October 31st, even after the US State Department ordered non-emergency staff out of Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. Nothing has been postponed, and Saudi officials have said the DAZN pay-per-view will go ahead as planned, as BoxingScene reported.

That is the position 10 days out, and for me it is a fragile one. Missile and drone attacks have hit Saudi airports, and the same security picture has already wiped out other big events in the city. I rate this as a fight that is on, but not safe from change.

Canelo Alvarez Next Fight: Is Riyadh Still On?

Yes, for now. Sky Sports reported on Thursday that the show currently looks set to go ahead, with Alvarez still on course to meet Mbilli in the Saudi capital.

Mbilli’s side is not wavering. His promoter, Camille Estephan, said: “Christian will arrive in Saudi as planned. I’m very confident the fight goes ahead and Mbilli will keep his belt and dethrone Canelo, God willing.”

Alvarez had previously indicated he intends to go through with the fight despite the security concerns. Those comments came before Wednesday’s order, though.

Canelo Mbilli Riyadh: What The US Departure Order Means

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott confirmed the ordered departure on Wednesday, October 21st. It covers non-emergency US government employees and their family members in Saudi Arabia only.

The department said the order followed attacks by Iranian-supported Houthi rebels on airports and other infrastructure, which have claimed at least 20 lives and injured at least 370. Its statement said the safety of personnel and their families “remain our highest priority”. The US Embassy in Riyadh also warned that the fighting could escalate rapidly.

Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport was struck on October 10, an attack that killed 12 people and injured more than 300, CBS News reported. The UK government is warning against non-essential travel to Saudi Arabia, and the US advises citizens to reconsider travel there. The State Department’s advisory sits at Level 3, with the Yemen border area at Level 4, “Do Not Travel”.

The most worrying voice so far is trainer Robert Garcia, who is preparing Lindolfo Delgado for an IBF super-lightweight title fight on the card. He told reporter Elie Seckbach that the airport is being bombed and said of his team’s situation: “We’re not secured.” Garcia was the first person involved with the show to state his fears publicly.

Christian Mbilli v Canelo: The Key Facts

This is a big night for both men. Alvarez, 36, has not fought since losing his undisputed super-middleweight titles to Terence Crawford in September 2025, and he wants to come back with a win and reclaim the belt. Mbilli, 31, is unbeaten at 29-0-1 and is the champion Alvarez has to beat to do it.

Mbilli won the WBC interim belt with a first-round stoppage of Maciej Sulecki in Quebec City in June 2025. He was upgraded to full champion after Crawford vacated, and he drew with Lester Martinez along the way. Alvarez has boxed in Riyadh once before, a unanimous points win over William Scull.

The date has already moved once. The bout was first set for September 12th before it was pushed back to October 31st.

Canelo Alvarez Riyadh Fight: Card, DAZN And Other Events

The DAZN pay-per-view is the broadcast Saudi officials say is going ahead. The card is deep, with Garcia’s fighter Delgado chasing an IBF super-lightweight title. Our Canelo v Mbilli undercard report covers Munguia v Zon and the other world title fights on the bill. For UK viewing, check boxing on TV today for the latest schedule.

Other sport in Riyadh has not been as lucky. The tennis Six Kings Slam and the Saudi International golf tournament have both been postponed. WWE’s Crown Jewel is still scheduled for Riyadh on November 7th, and UFC has an event in the city on December 5th. UFC boss Dana White said earlier this week the promotion has no plans to change its schedule, and UFC 333 is on Saturday in Abu Dhabi.

Saudi money runs deep through all of it. TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of UFC and WWE, is also in business with Saudi Arabia through Zuffa Boxing, which counts Saudi firm Sela and financier Turki Alalshikh among its owners.

Jack’s Verdict

I think this fight should not be treated as a date that must be kept at any cost. Two big Riyadh events have already been postponed, the airport has been hit, and the US has pulled its own staff out, so insisting everything is fine looks reckless. Robert Garcia’s “We’re not secured” is the line that sticks with me, because it comes from a trainer with a world title fighter on the card, not from a commentator. The counter-argument is fair: Mbilli’s camp is travelling, Alvarez has said he wants to fight, and the date has already been delayed once from September 12th. The best outcome is still Canelo v Mbilli going ahead on October 31st with everyone’s travel and security properly guaranteed. If that cannot be done, a short move to a new date is far better than losing the fight.
