Canelo vs Mbilli prediction: Benavidez expects stoppage as Riyadh fight nears
Canelo vs Mbilli for the WBC super-middleweight title is on Saturday 31 October in Riyadh. Here are the times, the fight card, the odds and what David Benavidez has said.
Canelo vs Mbilli prediction: David Benavidez expects Canelo Alvarez to stop Christian Mbilli, saying a body shot could decide Saturday’s WBC super-middleweight title fight in Riyadh.
Tim Bradley also sees a route to a late stoppage for Alvarez, although he warns that Mbilli’s work rate could cause problems. Matthew Hatton believes the Mexican still has enough to win but would prefer to see his former opponent retire.
The three assessments put the same question at the centre of the contest: can Mbilli maintain his pressure without giving Alvarez the openings he needs?
Canelo vs Mbilli prediction: Benavidez backs a body-shot finish
Benavidez told FightHype that Mbilli would need more than a high volume of punches to overcome Alvarez, according to Boxing News’ report of the interview.
Discussing Mbilli’s previous opponent, Benavidez said Lester Martinez “gave him a hell of a fight”. He nevertheless predicted a stoppage win for Alvarez, telling FightHype in comments reported by Boxing News: “I think [Canelo] stops him with a body shot.”
Boxing News also reported that Benavidez regards Alvarez as a modern great, despite never getting the opportunity to challenge him for his super-middleweight titles.
Bradley sees a late stoppage, with a warning for Canelo
Bradley’s assessment is more conditional. Speaking to DAZN, in comments reported by Boxing News, he identified opportunities for Alvarez to land uppercuts, hooks and punches to the body.
However, Bradley also warned that Mbilli’s activity could become a significant problem if Alvarez cannot hurt him or make him hesitate.
He suggested Alvarez could gradually wear the champion down before landing a more damaging punch and “maybe even stop him late”.
Matthew Hatton backs Canelo but questions the risk
Hatton, who fought Alvarez in 2011, believes his former opponent can win. His concern is whether continuing to fight is worth the potential damage to an already established legacy.
“I do think he’s still got enough left to beat Mbilli,” Hatton told Sky Sports’ Toe2Toe podcast, as reported by Sky Sports.
Hatton praised the punch selection and understanding of boxing that Alvarez showed even as a young fighter. But he would now like to see him retire, arguing that another defeat could affect how the closing stages of his career are remembered.
His view therefore differs from the stoppage predictions: he backs Alvarez’s remaining ability while questioning the decision to continue.
