Coventry City beat Newcastle United 4-1 as substitutes Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni scored late goals to secure their first home points of the Premier League season.
Jack Rudoni’s early penalty and Sidiki Chérif’s strike shortly after half-time put Frank Lampard’s side in control at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Sven Botman reduced the deficit with 20 minutes remaining, but Simms and Mfuni each scored within three minutes of coming on to settle the contest.
Coventry had scored just once in their opening five league matches. Four goals on Monday lifted them to six points, while Newcastle remain on eight.
Coventry 4-1 Newcastle: Rudoni and Chérif establish lead
Rudoni opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the sixth minute, giving Coventry an advantage they held until the interval.
Chérif doubled the lead in the 48th minute with a right-footed finish, leaving Newcastle with a two-goal deficit to recover.
The visitors made a triple substitution in the 59th minute, introducing Amar Dedic, Joelinton and Bazoumana Touré for Lewis Miley, Joe Willock and Jacob Murphy.
Botman then gave Newcastle hope in the 70th minute, scoring from Nico González’s assist to make it 2-1.
Coventry substitutes settle the contest
Lampard introduced Simms for Chérif in the 78th minute, and the striker needed only three minutes to restore Coventry’s two-goal cushion.
Brandon Thomas-Asante provided the assist as Simms made it 3-1.
Mfuni followed with an equally swift contribution. Having replaced Matt Grimes in the 83rd minute, he scored Coventry’s fourth in the 86th from Jay Dasilva’s assist.
The late goals completed a convincing scoreline for a Coventry side who began the evening in 19th place.
Newcastle possession brings little reward
Newcastle finished with 67% possession and 19 shots to Coventry’s nine, but both sides registered six efforts on target.
The visitors also led the corner count 6-2 and were credited with three big chances to Coventry’s two. Those advantages did not translate into enough goals to threaten the hosts after Simms struck.
Coventry’s Milan van Ewijk and Newcastle substitute Joelinton received the game’s only yellow cards.
