Frank Lampard praised Coventry City’s energy and quality after his side beat Newcastle United 4-1 to secure successive Premier League victories.

Coventry followed their win at Nottingham Forest with their first home success of the campaign, scoring four times after managing just one goal in their opening five league matches.

“Today we showed a big energy and showed our abilities which we’ll have to maximise,” Lampard told BBC Sport, in comments carried by AOL.

Lampard’s Coventry respond after Newcastle goal

Lampard acknowledged that Coventry needed some fortune alongside the quality of their finishing.

Jack Rudoni’s early penalty and Sidiki Chérif’s second-half strike established a two-goal lead, before Sven Botman’s reply gave Newcastle hope with 20 minutes remaining.

Coventry then settled the match through two substitutes. Ellis Simms scored three minutes after replacing Chérif, and Stephen Mfuni added the fourth three minutes after coming on for Matt Grimes.

Those contributions ensured Newcastle’s goal did not develop into a comeback.

Six points from two games

The result marks a significant change from Coventry’s opening four league matches, which all ended in defeat without a goal scored.

Victories over Forest and Newcastle have since brought six points and five goals, with Monday’s performance delivering the home breakthrough Lampard’s side needed.

Newcastle had 67% possession and 19 shots, but Coventry matched their six efforts on target and made their opportunities count.
