Szoboszlai injury concerns deepened during Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Brentford, with Andoni Iraola warning that the midfielder and Jeremie Frimpong will be out for “some time”.
Both players were forced off on Saturday, leaving Liverpool with fresh selection problems before Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Villarreal. Neither has been given a return date.
Szoboszlai injury: the same hamstring problem returns
Szoboszlai lasted 32 minutes on his comeback after missing the Manchester City and LASK matches with a hamstring problem. Trey Nyoni replaced him.
Iraola said the midfielder had felt the same injury and was “probably not healed enough”, confirming that Liverpool must allow him more recovery time.
Frimpong suffers a new injury
Frimpong replaced Ronald Araújo at half-time but went off within ten minutes, with Rio Ngumoha introduced and Víctor Muñoz moving to right-back.
Iraola described Frimpong’s injury as a new problem, explaining that the Dutchman had finished the midweek match at LASK with cramp.
Liverpool’s fixtures and options
Liverpool host Villarreal on Tuesday 20 October before Brighton visit Anfield on Sunday 25 October. Chelsea, Arsenal, Fenerbahce and Crystal Palace then follow before the November international break.
Ryan Gravenberch is available again after suspension, offering some relief in midfield. However, Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Vitezslav Jaros were already sidelined, as detailed in This Is Anfield’s injury update.
Alexander Isak’s scoring return, assessed in our Liverpool player ratings, provided better news. Cody Gakpo also returned to the squad but remained an unused substitute.
