Shaun Edwards joins Argentina for 2027 World Cup

Shaun Edwards will join Argentina as defence coach through the 2027 Rugby World Cup after completing his short-term consultancy with England’s Red Roses.

The former Wales and France coach will work under Felipe Contepomi, with ex-Argentina head coach Mario Ledesma also returning as forwards coach.

The appointments were announced on Friday as Los Pumas strengthen their coaching staff ahead of next year’s tournament in Australia.

Shaun Edwards takes Argentina role

Edwards is currently working with the Red Roses during their WXV Global Series campaign and will link up with Argentina at the end of October.

His first fixtures will come in November’s Nations Championship programme, when Argentina face Ireland, Italy and France.

The move gives Edwards another role in men’s international rugby following his departure from France earlier this year. He helped Wales win four Six Nations titles before adding three with Les Bleus.

Contepomi welcomed the experience of his two new coaches.

“They know what it means to compete at the highest level and can contribute a lot to the team,” he said, as reported by Sky Sports.

What does the move mean for England?

Edwards’ recent work with England Women had prompted speculation about a possible role with Steve Borthwick’s men’s team.

His Argentina agreement instead commits him to a rival nation through next year’s World Cup.

Ledesma, who led Los Pumas between 2018 and 2022, will also remain on Contepomi’s staff through the tournament.
