Ciaran Frawley Ireland Fly-Half: Why He Should Start
Jack Crowley and Harry Byrne are injured, so Ciaran Frawley and Sam Prendergast are the fly-halves in Andy Farrell's squad. I think Frawley should start v Argentina.
Andy Farrell named his Ireland squad for the Nations Championship home leg on Wednesday, and the Ciaran Frawley Ireland fly-half debate now has a real edge to it.
With Jack Crowley and Harry Byrne injured, Frawley and Sam Prendergast are the fly-halves picked, and Dan Sheehan captains the side in place of the injured Caelan Doris.
For me, Frawley should get the first go.
Ireland Rugby Squad 2026: Captain, Recalls And Omissions
The squad is a settled one, with two new faces and a long injury list.
- Captain: Sheehan leads Ireland, with Doris still out with knee and foot issues.
- Uncapped call-ups: Ulster pair Jamie Benson and James McNabney. Benson, 24, joined from Harlequins, is a former England Under-20 international and plays centre or fly-half. McNabney, 23, is a back row who has returned from an ACL injury.
- Recalls: Andrew Porter, Ryan Baird, Mack Hansen and Tommy O’Brien all missed the summer Tests.
- Omissions: Ulster’s Zac Ward and Cormac Izuchukwu, and Munster prop Jeremy Loughman.
- Injured: Crowley, Byrne, Jack Boyle, Jack Conan, Iain Henderson, Paddy McCarthy, Calvin Nash and Bryn Ward.
Scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park is in despite not having played for Leinster this season because of a groin injury.
“It’s always going to test you when you’ve got a couple of injuries in one position,” Farrell said, as quoted by BBC Sport.
Connacht Fly-Half: Why The Move West Matters
Frawley, 28, left Leinster in the summer for Connacht, where he is first choice under Stuart Lancaster. At Leinster he was rarely used at 10 and often played full-back or centre, so his versatility counted against him.
The move has paid off at once. He scored twice on his United Rugby Championship debut against Benetton and added two more in the 45-36 Investec Champions Cup win over Saracens in Galway. That is four tries in the opening weeks.
Former Ireland scrum-half Conor Murray has noticed. “I suspect that Sam is going in as number one choice, but Frawley is one to keep an eye on,” Murray told BBC Sport NI.
Goal-kicking is the open question. Murray called it “the elephant in the room” and noted that Frawley is not kicking off the tee for Connacht. Yet he landed three of four attempts for Ireland in the win over Japan in July. In 2024 his last-gasp drop goal in South Africa secured only Ireland’s second Test win in Springbok territory and a series draw with the world champions.
Ireland Fly-Half Competition 2026: Frawley vs Prendergast
The contest is between two very different players, and Farrell does the picking.
| Ciaran Frawley | Sam Prendergast | |
|---|---|---|
| Age | 28 | 23 |
| Club | Connacht | Leinster |
| Club form this season | Four tries, including two v Saracens | Back-to-back man of the match v Cardiff and Clermont |
| Test experience at 10 | One start, v Japan in July | 17 caps; wore 10 v Australia and New Zealand this summer |
Prendergast has not had a smooth introduction to Test rugby. Opposition sides have targeted his defence, and Farrell dropped him after a poor start to this year’s Six Nations. Crowley took over and impressed for the rest of the tournament. Crowley missed the summer Tests and remains out with a vascular injury.
Prendergast’s club form is strong, and his running game looks sharper. Frawley’s first Test start at 10, against Japan, was a solid display.
What The Nations Championship Means For 2027
Ireland won the Triple Crown this year but lost the Six Nations title to France. In the summer they narrowly beat Australia and beat Japan, then lost 40-21 to New Zealand in Auckland.
| Fixture | Date | Venue | Kick-off (GMT) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ireland v Argentina | November 6th | Aviva Stadium | 20:10 |
| Ireland v Fiji | November 14th | Aviva Stadium | 20:10 |
| Ireland v South Africa | November 21st | Aviva Stadium | 16:40 |
| Finals weekend (opponent to be decided) | November 27th-29th | Allianz Stadium, Twickenham | To be confirmed |
After November, the Six Nations is Farrell’s only extended competitive window before the 2027 World Cup in Australia, which is less than a year away. Murray believes Farrell could treat the Nations Championship as a mini-tournament, from a last-16 to a final.
I would rather Farrell found out now than in a Six Nations round. Ireland’s latest meetings with elite sides ended in defeats by 11, 22 and 19 points, so the 10 shirt needs an answer before Australia.
Jack’s Verdict
Frawley should start against Argentina, and I would rather see it than another Prendergast trial. Prendergast has 17 caps, was dropped in this year’s Six Nations and has had his defence targeted, whereas Frawley has four tries in the opening weeks, a solid first Test start at 10 and a drop goal in South Africa that most players only dream of. Prendergast’s two man-of-the-match awards are real and Murray expects him to be number one, so the other side is fair, but form and a clean slate should win. Frawley starts against Argentina, with Prendergast ready to push him.
Your Questions Answered
What is the position of the fly-half in rugby union?
The fly-half wears the number 10 shirt and is the team’s main playmaker. He directs the attack and, often, the goal-kicking. For Ireland, that kicking is a live issue: Murray called it “the elephant in the room”, and Frawley does not kick off the tee for Connacht.
Who is replacing Bundee Aki?
Nobody. Aki is in Farrell’s squad. He is among the centre options with Garry Ringrose, Robbie Henshaw and Stuart McCloskey. Jamie Osborne may get a run at 12, and new call-up Jamie Benson is a centre who can also cover fly-half.
When does Ireland’s autumn campaign start?
Ireland host Argentina at the Aviva Stadium on November 6th, kick-off 20:10 GMT. Fiji follow on November 14th and South Africa visit on November 21st, before the finals weekend at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, from November 27th to 29th. Ireland have won four of their past six meetings with the Springboks.
