Rio Ngumoha already has two goals and one assist from 35 senior appearances for Liverpool, and this week he won his first England cap.

The teenager says Mohamed Salah told him to add goals and assists to his game before leaving Anfield this summer, and that instruction stuck with him through the final months the pair spent together.

He came on in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Czechia, becoming only the third youngest player to appear for England’s senior men’s team.

Only Jude Bellingham and Wayne Rooney were younger when they won their first caps.

Rio Ngumoha: how it happened

Ngumoha’s rise already carries two record books entries.

He became Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer in August 2025, aged 16 years and 361 days, after striking in the 100th minute away at Newcastle United to snatch a winner deep into stoppage time.

Our full report on Liverpool covered that night in detail, and Ngumoha added a second senior goal in April, scoring in a 2-0 win over Fulham at Anfield.

Those two goals and one assist make up his full senior return so far.

It is a small sample, but it is the exact mix Salah told him to chase.

Mohamed Salah’s standard-setting advice

Mo Salah is the player Ngumoha credits most for his progress. Before leaving Liverpool this summer, after a trophy-laden decade on Merseyside, he gave the teenager a blunt instruction.

Ngumoha recalls him saying: “Rio, you know you’re a good player but to reach the top, you have to add the goals and assists.”

In our full report on Ngumoha’s Liverpool interview, he explained when that coaching happened. “He taught me a lot, especially towards the back end when he knew he was leaving,” Ngumoha said.

That timing matters. Salah was not offering generic advice from a distance; he was working with Ngumoha directly in his last months at the club, shaping a teenager who was about to inherit senior minutes.

What happens next

Ngumoha says he always believed an England debut would come, even if he was not sure of the timing.

“I definitely had the confidence to believe I could wear the England shirt at 18,” he said, in an interview with the Echo.

He added that he did not necessarily expect his first senior camp to double as his debut camp, but he believed he would play for England one day while still young. That belief has now been proven right.

Asked about the standard he is chasing, Ngumoha pointed to Jude Bellingham. “I think, you know, Jude is 23 and is already probably the best midfielder in the world at this point,” he said, before saying he hopes to do for club and country what Bellingham and Wayne Rooney have done.

For now, that remains the target rather than the next step.

After two goals, one assist, and a single England cap, Salah’s advice has set the direction. The numbers are still catching up.
