Unai Emery says Nicolas Jackson’s pursuit of a hat-trick was not a reason to change Aston Villa’s penalty taker during their 6-0 Champions League victory over Fenerbahce.
Unai Emery says Nicolas Jackson’s pursuit of a hat-trick was not a reason to change Aston Villa’s penalty taker during their 6-0 Champions League victory over Fenerbahce.
Jackson had scored twice before half-time when Villa won a second-half spot-kick. Ross Barkley took it and converted, before adding another goal four minutes later.
Why Nicolas Jackson did not take Villa’s penalty
According to PA’s report of Emery’s post-match reaction, the Villa manager felt an individual milestone should not determine who took the penalty.
Jackson wanted the opportunity to complete his treble, but Barkley retained responsibility from the spot.
The striker acknowledged his disappointment while stressing that the result mattered more.
“Yeah I wanted to take it but the most important thing is we win,” Jackson told TNT Sports, in comments reported by The Guardian.
Johan Manzambi had opened the scoring before Jackson’s double established a three-goal half-time lead. Barkley’s two goals extended the advantage, with substitute Tammy Abraham completing the scoring late on.
Jackson and Barkley were among the standout performers in our Aston Villa player ratings against Fenerbahce.
