Maresca backs Man City appeal after financial verdict

Enzo Maresca says Manchester City’s owners are convinced they will win their appeal against the verdict over breaches of Premier League financial rules.

Speaking at his first press conference since the ruling, the City manager backed the club’s hierarchy and rejected suggestions that their achievements had been tainted.

City deny the charges and have appealed against the independent commission’s findings.

“I think they are convinced that in the end we will win the appeal,” Maresca said, as reported by Sky Sports.

What is the position on the Man City appeal?

City confirmed they lodged their appeal on 1 October, arguing that the commission’s findings contained errors of law, principle and fact.

Maresca’s comments express his confidence in the club’s position. They do not represent a decision on the appeal.

The Italian, who succeeded Pep Guardiola this summer, said the financial case had not been discussed during talks over his appointment.

He also acknowledged that he had not read the commission’s findings, while insisting his attention remained on football.

The proceedings continue to draw scrutiny across the league, with City’s rivals reportedly seeking sanctions spanning multiple seasons if the appeal fails.

City return to Premier League action against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, with kick-off at 4.30pm.

Maresca’s side have won their opening five league matches, but the trip to Liverpool will be their first fixture since the verdict.
