Lauren Hemp struck two minutes after London City Lionesses equalised to give Manchester City a 2–1 victory in their Women’s Super League meeting.
The London City vs Man City result was settled by Hemp’s 74th-minute volley after Jana Fernández had cancelled out Khadija Shaw’s opener.
Victory took City to 22 points from eight matches, moving them above Chelsea ahead of the Blues’ later kick-off against Charlton. London City remained on 16 points.
London City vs Man City: Shaw breaks the deadlock
London City enjoyed the better of substantial spells before the interval, although Rebecca Knaak threatened for the visitors. Neither side could find a first-half breakthrough.
Shaw changed that eight minutes after the restart, taking the ball around Mary Earps before finishing to put City ahead.
Fernández brought the hosts back into the contest in the 72nd minute, meeting a corner with a header to make it 1–1.
Lauren Hemp delivers the winner
City’s response was immediate. Mary Fowler supplied the cross and Hemp finished on the volley to restore the lead in the 74th minute.
Andrée Jeglertz’s side protected their advantage to secure all three points, with City’s official match report recording the end of London City’s nine-match unbeaten run.
For City, it was a welcome return to winning ways after successive draws against Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain. Both matches had brought late equalisers for their opponents, a sequence covered in our WSL weekend preview.
