Joe Cullen suffered a first-round exit at the Swiss Darts Trophy after losing 6–5 to Tom Bissell in Basel on Friday.
Joe Cullen suffered a first-round exit at the Swiss Darts Trophy after losing 6–5 to Tom Bissell in Basel on Friday.
The deciding-leg defeat denied Cullen the opportunity to build his European Championship qualification total with a run in Switzerland.
Bissell advances to face Martin Schindler in the second round on Saturday.
Cullen misses qualification opportunity
Cullen entered the tournament as the closest challenger to Stephen Bunting, who occupied 32nd place in the provisional qualification standings, according to LiveDarts’ pre-tournament assessment.
His early exit therefore leaves him under pressure heading towards the end of the European Tour campaign.
Basel is the penultimate event in the qualification race, with the Dutch Darts Championship providing the remaining opportunity to improve positions.
The defeat does not, by itself, confirm Cullen’s elimination from contention.
Menzies also exits in Basel
Cameron Menzies was another afternoon casualty, losing 6–4 to Cristo Reyes.
Elsewhere, Bradley Brooks beat Niels Zonneveld 6–4, while William O’Connor defeated Jani Haavisto 6–1. Mensur Suljović, Karel Sedláček and Niko Springer also progressed.
