Fleetwood Town’s first appearance in the Carabao Cup fourth round brings Arsenal to a sold-out Highbury Stadium tonight, with the tie expected to generate about £400,000 for the League Two club.

The financial estimate, reported by The Times, adds to the significance of a cup run that has delivered three victories, six goals and no goals conceded.

But the occasion arrives during a difficult league spell. Fleetwood are 18th after losing five of their last seven League Two matches, including Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Exeter City.

Matt Lawlor now has to draw another cup performance from a side whose results have slipped since they earned their meeting with the Premier League champions.

Three clean sheets earned Fleetwood their first fourth-round tie

Fleetwood have played every round at Highbury, beginning with a 1-0 victory over Chesterfield through Ched Evans’ 14th-minute goal.

A 4-0 win against Shrewsbury Town followed before they overcame Championship opposition in round three.

Rhys Norrington-Davies’ 57th-minute own goal settled the 1-0 victory over Sheffield United on 16 September, taking Fleetwood into the last 16 for the first time.

That result also extended their unbeaten start to nine matches in all competitions. Their subsequent league decline has frustrated Lawlor, who has spoken about the need for greater consistency from his young squad.

“It has been a frustration of mine, and I’ve shared that with the group,” he said at Monday’s press conference, in comments reported by PA Media.

Lawlor wants respect for Arsenal without fear

Lawlor has acknowledged the difficulty of anticipating Mikel Arteta’s selection. Fleetwood have prepared for Arsenal collectively rather than building their plans around individual players.

His message, carried by Hayters and in Fleetwood’s own interview, is that his players should embrace the occasion.

“The respect is through the roof, but the fear can’t be through the roof,” he said.

Highbury sells out for the first time in more than a decade

Arsenal’s visit has filled Highbury for the first time in more than a decade.

Lawlor described the response in his interview with BBC Radio Lancashire, highlighting what the match means for supporters and the town.

Fleetwood have also offered hospitality packages for visiting supporters, including restaurant dining and directors’ lounge access, through their official ticketing provider.

The financial benefit gives the club something to retain beyond the final whistle. Lawlor’s immediate task is to ensure a full ground sees the side that has kept three successive cup clean sheets, rather than the one struggling for league consistency.
