Jack Rudoni, Taiwo Awoniyi and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto stand out in our Coventry vs Sunderland player ratings after the Sky Blues won 3-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

All three scored as Coventry established a commanding advantage. Enzo Le Fée replied from the penalty spot, but Sunderland could not recover and Omar Alderete’s late dismissal compounded their frustration.

Victor Torp also impressed for the hosts, while the visitors’ defensive errors left them chasing a game they never brought back under control.

See our confirmed line-ups and Sky Sports’ match report for the selections and key incidents.

All marks are out of 10.

Coventry City player ratings

Carl Rushworth — 7: Beaten from the penalty spot but helped Coventry protect their advantage afterwards, including dealing with Isidor’s late header. A reassuring contribution.

Milan van Ewijk — 7: Contributed to a defensive performance that restricted Sunderland’s recovery. The visitors found greater attacking momentum after their substitutions but could not overturn Coventry’s lead.

Stephen Mfuni — 7: A positive contribution to a winning defensive display. Sunderland’s starting attack struggled to turn possession into enough clear chances against Coventry’s back line.

Ethan Pinnock — 6: His handball gave Sunderland the penalty that brought them back into the game. Otherwise shared in Coventry’s successful protection of their advantage.

Jay Dasilva — 7: Part of a back four that kept Sunderland’s attack relatively quiet before the changes. Coventry retained enough defensive control to see the game out.

Caleb Yirenkyi — 7: Helped Coventry compete through midfield and remained involved late on, although he sent a shooting opportunity over the bar.

Victor Torp — 8: Forced Roefs into a save with a free-kick and supplied Rudoni before the third goal. An influential contribution despite an early booking.

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto — 8: Opened the scoring and gave Coventry the reward for their positive start. His goal forced Sunderland to chase the match.

Jack Rudoni — 8: Scored the third with a deflected effort and continued threatening late on. Drew the foul that brought Alderete’s second yellow card.

Yann Gboho — 6: Less prominent than Coventry’s other attacking players. Played his part in a productive forward unit before Thomas-Asante replaced him.

Taiwo Awoniyi — 8: Pressured O’Nien into losing possession and finished the opportunity himself. His goal gave Coventry a much firmer grip before half-time.

Coventry City substitutes

Sidiki Chérif — 6: Gave Sunderland another forward to contain during the closing stages and was fouled as Alderete collected his first booking.

Brandon Thomas-Asante — 6: Added fresh legs to the attack after Gboho’s withdrawal. Coventry maintained their advantage without needing another goal.

Matt Grimes — 6: Introduced late for Torp and helped Coventry manage the remaining minutes with Sunderland still searching for a route back.

Sunderland player ratings

Robin Roefs — 6: Saved well from Torp’s free-kick and could do little about Rudoni’s deflected effort. The problems in front of him were more significant.

Trai Hume — 4: His attempted clearance contributed to the opening goal. Sunderland needed greater defensive assurance from him before Meunier took over.

Luke O’Nien — 4: Caught in possession by Awoniyi for the second goal. Helped Sunderland threaten later, but that error left the visitors facing a substantial deficit.

Omar Alderete — 3: Deflected Rudoni’s effort past Roefs and then collected two late bookings. His dismissal completed a particularly damaging afternoon.

Reinildo — 6: Not directly involved in the mistakes that produced Coventry’s goals. A more dependable contribution than those of his defensive colleagues.

Granit Xhaka — 5: Supplied Brobbey with a first-half opportunity, but Sunderland needed more control from their captain as Coventry repeatedly gained the upper hand.

Noah Sadiki — 5: Could not help Sunderland establish sufficient midfield protection or attacking momentum. Replaced as the visitors sought more threat in the final stages.

Chris Rigg — 5: Tried to get efforts away around the penalty area but did not provide a breakthrough. Withdrawn with Sunderland already three goals behind.

Enzo Le Fée — 6: Converted the penalty to give Sunderland some hope. Their most significant attacking return came from his composure at the spot.

Nilson Angulo — 4: Unable to turn promising possession into enough danger. Sunderland’s attack looked more threatening after changes were made on the flanks.

Brian Brobbey — 5: Dragged a first-half chance wide when Sunderland needed a response. Too often left without enough support around him.

Sunderland substitutes

Wilson Isidor — 6: Added movement and created a chance for Talbi. His late header also required attention from Rushworth as Sunderland kept searching.

Chemsdine Talbi — 5: Brought more attacking threat but missed a good opportunity soon after coming on. Sunderland needed a better finish from that position.

Thomas Meunier — 6: Helped steady the defensive side after replacing Hume, although Coventry’s advantage was already well established.

Malick Fofana — 5: Added another attacking option without producing the goal or assist that might have made the closing stages uncomfortable for Coventry.

Coventry vs Sunderland player ratings: player of the match

Jack Rudoni. Awoniyi’s pressing and Sakamoto’s opener were important, while Torp made a strong contribution behind them. Rudoni gets the nod for his goal and continued threat, including the late run that ended with Alderete’s dismissal.
