Coventry City beat Sunderland 3-1 to move out of the Premier League relegation zone, with Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni scoring for Frank Lampard’s side.

Enzo Le Fée replied from the penalty spot before Sunderland’s afternoon ended with Omar Alderete’s dismissal for a second yellow card.

Coventry vs Sunderland: hosts take control before half-time

Sakamoto gave Coventry the lead in the 17th minute with his first Premier League goal. The breakthrough put the hosts in command of a meeting between two sides who had started the afternoon in the bottom three.

Sunderland had an opportunity to respond through Brian Brobbey, who dragged his effort across goal and wide. At the other end, Robin Roefs kept the deficit to one when he tipped Victor Torp’s free-kick behind.

Coventry’s second arrived in the 37th minute. Awoniyi won the ball from Luke O’Nien before finishing to give Lampard’s side a 2-0 half-time lead.

It was Awoniyi’s first Premier League goal for Coventry and left Sunderland needing a substantial improvement after the interval.

Rudoni adds a third before Le Fée replies

Coventry strengthened their grip seven minutes into the second half. Rudoni’s shot took a deflection off Alderete and beat Roefs to make it 3-0.

Régis Le Bris introduced Wilson Isidor and Chemsdine Talbi as Sunderland tried to recover. Talbi had an opening to reduce the deficit but sent his effort wide.

The visitors eventually pulled a goal back in the 67th minute, with Le Fée converting a penalty. It gave Sunderland time to attempt a recovery, but Coventry retained a two-goal cushion.

The scoring sequence is recorded in Sky Sports’ Coventry vs Sunderland match coverage.

Alderete sent off in stoppage time

Sunderland’s hopes faded as Coventry continued to threaten on the break. Caleb Yirenkyi shot over late on, while Rudoni also tested Roefs with a free-kick during stoppage time.

Alderete received his first yellow card in the fourth added minute for a foul on substitute Sidiki Chérif. Five minutes later, he pulled back Rudoni and was shown a second yellow.

Between those incidents, Carl Rushworth tipped an Isidor header over the bar. Coventry avoided the concession of a second goal and completed a victory that brought relief after consecutive league defeats.

The dismissal left Sunderland finishing with 10 men and added to Le Bris’ problems after another unsuccessful league afternoon.

Coventry respond after consecutive defeats

Lampard’s side had lost to Tottenham and Fulham in their previous two league matches. This victory took them to nine points from nine games and moved them clear of the bottom three.

The attacking response was particularly significant after the 1-0 defeat by Fulham. In his pre-match assessment of the Sunderland game, Lampard had highlighted Coventry’s need to create more in the final third.

Three different scorers delivered that response. Sakamoto’s opener was followed by Awoniyi’s first league goal for the club and Rudoni’s third of the Premier League campaign.

Sunderland remain on five points. Their midweek Carabao Cup victory over Brentford offered encouragement, but they were unable to carry that result into the league.

They have now taken one point from their last six Premier League matches. The latest standings are available in our Premier League table.
