Alysson helped Aston Villa make it three Champions League wins from three, winning a penalty and forcing an own goal in their 3-1 victory over Viking.

Ross Barkley opened the scoring and Emi Buendia added the second from the spot. Henrik Heggheim’s own goal put Villa firmly in command before Peter Christiansen’s late reply.

There was plenty for Unai Emery to take from his attacking selections, although Nicolas Jackson will feel he should have joined the scorers.

Aston Villa player ratings vs Viking

Zion Suzuki — 7/10

Saved from Tobias Moi and Zlatko Tripic after the break. Also picked out Garnacho for a shooting opportunity.

Joao Gomes — 6/10

Asked to cover at right-back in Emery’s reshuffled side. Completed 70 minutes before Matty Cash took over, with Villa already three goals ahead.

Victor Lindelof — 6/10

Started alongside Pau Torres in the middle of the defence. Viking became more threatening after the interval, making the second half a less comfortable assignment.

Pau Torres — 6/10

Missed a chance following a corner. Villa’s late concession took some gloss off the defensive performance.

Tyrone Mings — 6/10

Filled in at left-back as Emery addressed his shortage of available full-backs. The result justified the reshuffle, although Villa could not finish with a clean sheet.

John McGinn — 7/10

Created an early headed chance for Jackson and later released Alysson on the break. Useful service for Villa’s forwards.

Ross Barkley — 8/10

Headed in Mbaye’s cross to break the deadlock. An important contribution after Villa’s early chances had gone begging.

Alysson — 8/10

Villa’s standout attacker. Won the penalty and forced Heggheim’s own goal, giving the visitors problems which they could not resolve without conceding.

Emi Buendia — 7/10

Converted the penalty but passed up other opportunities. A productive evening, with scope for a more emphatic return.

Ibrahim Mbaye — 7/10

Supplied Barkley’s opener and tested Arild Ostbo himself. Made his starting opportunity count.

Nicolas Jackson — 5/10

Two early headers were saved and he later shot over from Alysson’s pass. Chances arrived; the finish did not.

Substitutes

Matty Cash — 6/10

Replaced Gomes after 70 minutes. Helped see out the closing stages and won a defensive free-kick in stoppage time.

Leon Goretzka — 6/10

Replaced Barkley and created a shooting chance for Garnacho.

Tammy Abraham — NR

Replaced Jackson, but the recorded action offers too little individual evidence for a fair mark.

Alejandro Garnacho — 6/10

Made himself a shooting threat, forcing a save before sending another effort over. Unable to add the fourth.

George Hemmings — NR

Introduced for Alysson after 75 minutes. Insufficient individual evidence to give a meaningful rating.
