Michael Carrick’s Manchester United future in doubt as club consider alternatives after Bournemouth defeat
Manchester United are considering alternatives to Michael Carrick after the 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth, with Sky Sports reporting that the process began before Sunday’s match.
Manchester United are considering alternatives to Michael Carrick after the 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth, with Sky Sports reporting that the process began before Sunday’s match.
Carrick is under pressure after United’s worst-ever Premier League start.
Sky Sports News says there is an expectation among club insiders that Carrick will lose his job. United had not announced a decision at the time of writing.
The defeat extended their winless run to eight matches in all competitions. They sit 16th in the Premier League with seven points from eight games.
What has been reported about United’s decision?
The Guardian reports that United’s hierarchy held talks on Sunday about whether to dismiss Carrick.
According to Sky, director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada will make a recommendation to co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
That reporting indicates Carrick’s position is being actively considered. It does not establish that a dismissal has been agreed or that a replacement has been appointed.
What has Carrick said?
Carrick said he was continuing with his work despite the uncertainty.
“I’m not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. I’m carrying on as normal,” he said, as reported by Reuters.
In post-match interviews published by United, he acknowledged that performances and results had fallen short.
“It’s a tough situation. There’s no hiding from it. What it looks like, what’s next, I really don’t know,” he said.
Carrick also described anxiety within the stadium and said his players were hurting after another heavy defeat. His response expressed uncertainty about what happens next, rather than offering an assurance that he would remain in charge.
Howe and Nagelsmann linked with the role
Sky identifies Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann as the expected frontrunners should a vacancy arise, reporting that neither would require compensation.
Howe would be interested in discussions with United after taking a break from football, having previously managed Newcastle. It also reports that Unai Emery and Antonio Conte have been considered, although neither is thought to be among the current favourites.
Our earlier coverage examined the report that Howe is Wilcox’s preferred candidate. Interest in a manager, however, remains separate from an approach, agreement or appointment.
Bournemouth defeat leaves United with familiar questions
Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scored in Bournemouth’s 3-0 victory at Old Trafford, while Bruno Fernandes remained an unused substitute.
United were two goals behind at half-time and conceded again after the break. Leaving out their captain did not produce the response Carrick needed following the midweek defeat at Como.
The immediate question is whether United retain their head coach. The broader issue is how they address the performances that have brought them to this point, a question explored in our analysis of Manchester United under INEOS.
