Manchester United’s winless run stretched to eight matches as Bournemouth won 3-0 at Old Trafford, increasing the pressure on Michael Carrick after his decision to leave Bruno Fernandes on the bench.

Rayan and Marcus Tavernier scored five minutes apart before half-time, with Evanilson adding the third after the interval following a mistake by Senne Lammens.

The defeat leaves United with seven points from eight Premier League matches. Bournemouth move above them on nine points after a second successive league victory.

Rayan and Tavernier put Bournemouth in control

Bournemouth made the decisive breakthrough in the 38th minute through Rayan, then doubled their advantage through Tavernier in the 43rd.

Adrien Truffert supplied the second goal, leaving United facing a two-goal deficit at the interval. Carrick responded by introducing Matheus Cunha for Youri Tielemans at the start of the second half.

The visitors had arrived with momentum under Marco Rose, whose side had beaten Sunderland and AC Milan in their previous two matches. Our Bournemouth team-news preview outlined Rose’s determination to pursue another victory at Old Trafford.

They delivered it with a clean sheet and three different scorers.

Evanilson punishes Lammens to settle the contest

United introduced Lisandro Martínez for Ayden Heaven after 65 minutes, but Bournemouth extended their lead six minutes later.

Evanilson capitalised on Lammens’ error, getting beyond the goalkeeper before finishing from a difficult angle. It was a damaging third goal for United and the finish that put the result beyond serious doubt.

Carrick subsequently sent on Joshua Zirkzee and Shea Lacey, but United could not find a reply. The club’s official website confirmed the 3-0 defeat at full-time.

Fernandes omission fails to bring a response

Fernandes’ absence from the starting XI had dominated the build-up following his criticism of United’s approach in the midweek 4-1 defeat at Como.

Carrick told Sky Sports before kick-off that the selection was based on “pure football”, as reported by talkSPORT. Fernandes remained an unused substitute.

Leaving out the captain did not produce the response Carrick needed. United conceded twice before the interval and again after making changes, extending a run without a victory that now spans eight games in all competitions.

United were 16th and one point above the relegation places immediately after the match, according to talkSPORT’s post-match coverage.
