Hull City’s wait for a Premier League victory stretched to six matches after Dango Ouattara cancelled out Oli McBurnie’s penalty in a 1-1 draw with Brentford at the MKM Stadium.

McBurnie put Sergej Jakirović’s side ahead in the 24th minute after Aaron Hickey brought down Tim Iroegbunam. But Ouattara equalised from close range in the 63rd minute, shortly after Keith Andrews introduced Mikkel Damsgaard and Jaidon Anthony.

Both sides had opportunities to win it, with Hull substitute Joe Gelhardt turning a late chance wide.

McBurnie punishes Brentford’s mistake

Hull’s breakthrough came from pressure on Brentford’s attempts to play out from the back.

Caoimhín Kelleher passed short towards Hickey inside his own penalty area, allowing Iroegbunam to intervene. Hickey fouled the Hull midfielder and McBurnie converted the resulting penalty.

It was McBurnie’s first Premier League goal since scoring for Sheffield United against Chelsea in April 2024, as detailed in The Sun’s match report.

The goal rewarded the assertiveness Jakirović had called for in his pre-match assessment of Brentford’s visit. Hull had forced an error in a dangerous position and made it count.

Andrews’ substitutes help create the equaliser

Brentford arrived without suspended midfielders Vitaly Janelt and Yehor Yarmoliuk, the selection problem examined in our analysis of Andrews’ midfield options.

With his side still trailing, Andrews brought on Damsgaard and Anthony in the 62nd minute. Both were involved in the equaliser a minute later.

Damsgaard combined with Anthony and crossed into the penalty area. Hull could not clear, Igor Thiago nudged the ball towards Ouattara and the forward finished from close range.

Brentford’s official report records the immediate contribution of the two substitutes, whose introduction helped turn a losing position into a point.

Cho and Gelhardt threaten a late Hull winner

The equaliser did not settle the contest.

Anthony shot narrowly wide and later had a header saved by Konstantinos Tzolakis. Hull also threatened through Mohamed-Ali Cho, who broke behind the visiting defence before Kelleher saved with his feet.

Cho created another opening in the closing stages, beating Michael Kayode on the left and crossing for Gelhardt. Under pressure from Mamadou Sangaré, the substitute could only direct his effort wide.

Hull therefore had to settle for another draw. They have collected four points during their six-match winless sequence, taking them to 10 points from eight league fixtures.

Brentford move to 11 points. Their recovery avoided a second consecutive league defeat, but a fifth draw in eight matches leaves Andrews still looking to turn competitive performances into more victories.
