England Nations League qualification: What they need to reach quarter-finals
England Nations League qualification is within reach after Tuesday’s 3-0 win over the Czech Republic, with one more point enough to guarantee a quarter-final place.
England Nations League qualification is within reach after Tuesday’s 3-0 win over the Czech Republic, with one more point enough to guarantee a quarter-final place.
Thomas Tuchel’s side have two group matches remaining in November, against Croatia and Spain.
England have not mathematically secured their place, but their seven-goal victory in Croatia also gives them a substantial advantage if the teams finish level on points.
How does England’s group stand?
Spain lead Group A3 with a maximum 12 points after winning 2-1 in Croatia on Tuesday. England are second, six points clear of third-placed Croatia.
The top two qualify for the quarter-finals.
| Team | Played | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Spain | 4 | 12 |
| England | 4 | 9 |
| Croatia | 4 | 3 |
| Czech Republic | 4 | 0 |
Spain have already secured a top-two finish. The Czech Republic cannot catch England.
What do England need to qualify?
A draw against Croatia on 12 November would guarantee England’s place with a game to spare.
That would take them to 10 points, beyond Croatia’s maximum possible total of nine before the final two fixtures.
England would also qualify with a point away to Spain in their last match, regardless of the Croatia result.
Even two defeats would not necessarily eliminate them. Croatia would need to win both remaining games and finish above England on the tie-break criteria.
Why does the 7-0 win over Croatia matter?
Under UEFA’s group-stage rules, results between the teams concerned take priority over overall goal difference when sides finish level on points.
England’s 7-0 victory in Rijeka therefore provides considerable protection.
A defeat by fewer than seven goals in the return match would still guarantee England finish above Croatia, even if both teams eventually end on nine points.
A seven-goal defeat would leave their head-to-head records level, bringing further tie-break criteria into play.
Can England still win the group?
Yes. England trail Spain by three points and still have to face them away.
However, beating Spain would not automatically secure first place. Results in the preceding round and, potentially, the tie-break criteria would determine the final order.
Spain won the first meeting 3-2 at Wembley.
Finishing first carries a practical advantage: group winners are seeded for the quarter-final draw and play the second leg at home. They face a runner-up from another group.
When are England’s remaining matches?
Both games kick off at 7.45pm GMT:
- Thursday 12 November: England v Croatia.
- Sunday 15 November: Spain v England.
The dates and kick-off times are confirmed in England’s official competition guide.
When are the Nations League quarter-finals?
The two-legged quarter-finals take place in March 2027.
The four winners progress to June’s finals, which include the semi-finals, third-place match and final.
