Taylor Harwood-Bellis: Aston Villa Champions League Rule Explained

Taylor Harwood-Bellis has been added to Aston Villa’s Champions League squad in place of the injured Matteo Ruggeri, giving Unai Emery another defensive option for the European campaign.

UEFA’s register of squad changes confirms the replacement was recorded on Wednesday 21 October. Harwood-Bellis was subsequently named among the substitutes for Villa’s 3–1 victory over Viking.

The change was possible because UEFA allows a limited exception to its registration deadline when an outfield player suffers a long-term injury.

For Ruggeri, that carries a condition: he cannot return to European action within 60 days of the injury, even if he recovers sooner.

Why could Villa register Taylor Harwood-Bellis after the deadline?

The normal deadline for Champions League List A submissions was 2 September, but Article 31.14 of UEFA’s regulations permits one temporary outfield replacement during the league phase, up to and including matchday six.

The injury or illness must last at least 60 days, and the replacement must already have been registered with the club before the original List A deadline.

Clubs must provide medical evidence, while any relevant locally trained player requirements must still be met.

Villa have used that provision to bring Harwood-Bellis into their European squad while Ruggeri is unavailable. The change gives an existing member of Emery’s squad access to Champions League matches after he missed the original selection.

When can Matteo Ruggeri return to the Champions League?

The 60-day period runs from the date of the injury, rather than the date UEFA records the replacement.

Once that minimum period has passed and Ruggeri is fit, Villa can restore him to the squad. Harwood-Bellis would then have to be removed as his replacement, with UEFA notified by its deadline on the day before Ruggeri’s next European appearance.

That does not establish a confirmed comeback date. Ruggeri’s recovery will determine when he is ready to play.

It is also a European registration restriction, not a domestic suspension. His availability for Premier League and domestic cup matches remains a separate question.

Emery initially said the defender would be missing for more than a month, as covered in our earlier Ruggeri injury update.

What does Harwood-Bellis add to Emery’s options?

Villa’s recent injuries have forced Emery to reshuffle his defence.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was subsequently ruled out for an expected three to four weeks, while Ian Maatsen had only recently returned to training before the Viking game. Our Villa injury update explains the problems Emery has been managing.

Against Viking, João Gomes and Tyrone Mings started at full-back, with Matty Cash and Maatsen among the substitutes.

Harwood-Bellis offers another centre-back option when Emery needs to move defenders elsewhere or rotate his team. His inclusion increases the choices available for European matches, although it does not guarantee him a starting place.

Villa’s win over Viking took them to nine points from their opening three Champions League games. They have built a strong position while managing those absences; Harwood-Bellis is now available to help them protect it.
