Alysson Aston Villa Analysis: Viking Display Shows His Value Now

Alysson finished Aston Villa’s win over Viking without a goal to his name. He nevertheless helped decide the match twice.

First came the foul which allowed Emi Buendia to double Villa’s lead from the penalty spot. Then came the run which ended with Henrik Heggheim turning the ball into his own net.

Those were substantial contributions to Villa’s 3-1 Champions League victory. For Alysson, they also strengthened an argument which goes beyond what he might become.

Villa are already getting something useful from him.

The question now is how often Unai Emery can rely on it, particularly when the opposition gives him less space and asks more of his defensive work.

Alysson’s Aston Villa contribution goes beyond the scoresheet

The penalty and own goal were the clearest examples of Alysson making Viking uncomfortable, but his involvement extended beyond those two incidents.

In the first half, Arild Ostbo saved his shot before Buendia headed the rebound wide. After the interval, Alysson supplied Buendia for another close-range effort which the goalkeeper kept out.

He later created an opportunity for Nicolas Jackson, who shot over following a counter-attack.

The recorded match action therefore shows several different contributions: attempts of his own, opportunities for team-mates and actions which forced defensive mistakes.

That matters when assessing a young attacker. A promising run can catch the eye without improving the team’s chance of scoring. Against Viking, Alysson repeatedly took his involvement further.

His most valuable work brought Villa into positions from which a goal, a save or a defensive intervention followed.

Why running at defenders mattered

Alysson’s influence was particularly apparent when Viking had to react to him moving towards their goal.

The penalty came from Zlatko Tripic’s foul. Villa’s third followed another Alysson run, with Heggheim unable to prevent the ball ending up in his own net.

There was fortune in the final outcome of the third goal. It would be wrong to treat a defender’s own goal as proof of flawless attacking execution.

But Alysson had helped create the situation in which that mistake became possible.

That is a useful distinction for Villa. An attacker does not have to beat several opponents or finish every move himself to unsettle a defence. Forcing a player to turn, chase or attempt an awkward intervention can be enough to open the game for someone else.

Alysson did that with a tangible return against Viking. His performance earned an 8/10 in our Aston Villa player ratings.

Emery’s challenge is about the whole performance

Emery’s assessment after the match explains why an exciting attacking display does not automatically settle a selection decision.

“He’s improving his consistency,” the Villa manager said in comments reported by Hayters.

Emery’s wider assessment covered Alysson’s positioning, defensive work and understanding with team-mates. The individual ability is evident; the next stage is making it dependable within Villa’s approach.

That places a different demand on him from simply producing the occasional dangerous run.

A winger needs to recognise when to hold his position, when to offer a passing option and when to attack beyond the defence. He must also respond when possession is lost, particularly if the players behind him have moved forward.

The Viking game supplied strong evidence of Alysson’s attacking value. It did not, by itself, establish that every part of that wider role is now secure.

Emery’s emphasis on consistency is therefore significant. He is identifying the work which could turn a productive performance into a sustained place in the side.
