Aston Villa Women 2-1 Liverpool: Grant sparks comeback

Aston Villa secured their first Women’s Super League victory of the season after coming from behind to beat Liverpool 2-1 at Keys Park on Sunday 18 October.

Chasity Grant equalised after the break before a Grace Fisk own goal completed the turnaround, cancelling out Natalia Ramos’ impressive first-half opener.

Villa had entered the afternoon without a win in nine league matches. Their temporary move to Keys Park, prompted by Villa Park’s crowded October schedule, ultimately provided the setting for a much-needed change in fortunes.

Ramos put Liverpool ahead after 16 minutes, receiving Fuka Nagano’s pass and beating Akane Okuma with a right-footed strike from outside the penalty area.

Villa made two changes at half-time, introducing Oriane Jean-François and Rofiat Imuran for Miri Taylor and Lily Murphy.

Khiara Keating saved from Imuran and Amalie Vangsgaard before Grant’s breakthrough in the 62nd minute. Racing forward on the counter, Grant finished across goal into the top-left corner.

Goalkeeper Okuma was credited with the assist in Sky Sports’ match record, adding an attacking contribution to her work keeping Liverpool out.

Fisk’s own goal ten minutes later put Villa ahead.

Liverpool continued to threaten, but Okuma saved Cornelia Kapocs’ header and denied substitute Vivien Endemann in stoppage time. Beata Olsson also headed narrowly wide late on.

The result lifts Villa to six points and 10th place, leaving them just one point behind Liverpool.

After three draws and two defeats in their opening five games, Villa finally have a victory to build on. Liverpool, meanwhile, will rue allowing a promising first half to become an afternoon without a point.
