Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley scored twice each as Aston Villa overwhelmed Fenerbahçe 6-0 at Villa Park on Wednesday night.
Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley scored twice each as Aston Villa overwhelmed Fenerbahçe 6-0 at Villa Park on Wednesday night.
Johan Manzambi opened the scoring before Jackson’s first-half double put Unai Emery’s side firmly in control. Barkley added two more after the interval, including a penalty, before substitute Tammy Abraham completed the scoring in the 90th minute.
The victory leaves Villa with six points from their opening two Champions League matches, while Fenerbahçe remain on one following their opening draw.
Aston Villa 6-0 Fenerbahce: Jackson takes control
Emery had made four changes to Villa’s starting XI, with Barkley and Ibrahim Mbaye among those brought into the side.
Manzambi put Villa ahead after 12 minutes. Jackson doubled the advantage in the 31st minute and struck again eight minutes later, leaving Fenerbahçe facing a three-goal deficit at half-time.
Boubacar Kamara supplied the assist for Jackson’s first goal, while Barkley set up his second. The midfielder would go on to make an even greater contribution after the break.
Barkley double ends any doubt
Barkley converted a 68th-minute penalty to make it 4-0, then scored again four minutes later from Mbaye’s assist.
His two goals and assist made him central to Villa’s attacking display, rewarding Emery’s decision to restore him to the starting line-up.
Villa were also able to give minutes to their substitutes. Leon Goretzka replaced Barkley in the 83rd minute, while Abraham and Alysson combined for the final goal, with Alysson providing the assist.
Abraham’s late contribution meant both Villa centre-forwards used on the night finished on the scoresheet.
Clean sheet accompanies six-goal display
The result followed Matty Cash’s call for better collective defending after Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Brentford.
However, the underlying numbers suggest Villa should not mistake the scoreline for a match without defensive tests. FotMob’s match statistics recorded 15 Fenerbahçe shots and 1.90 expected goals.
Villa produced 20 shots and 3.07 expected goals despite having 45 per cent possession. Their finishing helped turn that advantage in chances into a much wider winning margin.
