Matthias Jaissle described Newcastle United’s 4-1 defeat at Coventry City as “punishment in this league” after his side conceded twice late on.
Newcastle had reduced the deficit to 2-1 through Sven Botman, but goals from substitutes Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni ended their hopes of a recovery.
“That’s hard. That’s punishment in this league,” Jaissle told BBC Sport, in comments carried by Yahoo Sports.
Jaissle’s Newcastle beaten despite possession advantage
Newcastle finished with 67% possession and 19 shots to Coventry’s nine, although both sides registered six efforts on target.
Those figures brought little reward. Jack Rudoni’s sixth-minute penalty put Coventry ahead before Sidiki Chérif doubled the lead shortly after half-time.
Botman scored from Nico González’s assist in the 70th minute, giving Newcastle an opportunity to salvage something from the match.
Instead, Simms restored Coventry’s two-goal cushion in the 81st minute and Mfuni added a fourth five minutes later. Both scored within three minutes of coming off the bench.
