Aston Villa’s perfect Champions League start ended with a 3-0 defeat at Barcelona, where Lamine Yamal’s early goal and a Raphinha double exposed the scale of the challenge facing Unai Emery’s side.

Villa had moments of encouragement, including an opening created by Nicolas Jackson for Johan Manzambi, but could not turn them into a foothold in the match.

Jackson provides a glimpse of Villa’s threat

Nicolas Jackson — 6: His work to create a shooting opportunity for Manzambi was one of Villa’s more encouraging attacking moments. That earns him a little more credit on an evening when the visitors struggled to make Barcelona’s high defensive line work against them.

Johan Manzambi — 5: Shot wide after Jackson had fashioned an opening. Villa needed greater reward from opportunities such as that against opponents who were far more clinical.

Zion Suzuki — 6: Made an important save from Anthony Gordon after Barcelona’s pressing disrupted Villa’s attempt to play out. Conceding three should not automatically make this a poor individual goalkeeping performance.

Barcelona take control through midfield

Villa’s midfield and defensive marks reflect a collective struggle to contain Barcelona, rather than an attempt to pin the result on one player.

Pedri’s influence was central to the home side’s control, while Raphinha’s two second-half goals turned a narrow half-time deficit into a comfortable defeat.

Villa were still in contention at the interval. Their inability to build on that position was the disappointment, with Barcelona finding the quality to settle the match after the restart.

Substitute spotlight: Leon Goretzka — 6

Goretzka struck the post with a late header, coming close to giving Villa a consolation. It was a useful contribution from the bench, although the match had already moved beyond the visitors.
