Manchester United have gone nine matches without a win for the first time since 1988 after Chelsea’s 2–0 victory at Stamford Bridge increased the pressure on Michael Carrick.
Second-half goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer condemned United to a third successive defeat, with Lisandro Martinez sent off after conceding the penalty from which Palmer doubled Chelsea’s lead.
The result leaves United with seven points from nine Premier League matches. Their only league victory this season remains the win over promoted Ipswich, while their most recent success in any competition came against Sabah in the Champions League.
Man Utd winless run: nine games across all competitions
The nine-match sequence covers all competitions, rather than the Premier League alone. United have drawn three and lost six during that run.
Chelsea’s official statistical preview identified October and November 1988 as the last time United had gone nine consecutive matches without victory. Saturday’s defeat takes Carrick’s side to that same mark.
| Measure | United’s position after Chelsea defeat |
|---|---|
| Winless run in all competitions | Nine matches |
| Results during that run | Three draws, six defeats |
| Premier League record | One win, four draws, four defeats |
| Premier League points | Seven from nine matches |
| Wins in all competitions this season | Two from 13 matches |
The contrast with the end of last season is substantial. United finished that league campaign with five wins and a draw from their final six matches, securing third place and Champions League qualification.
That sequence began with a victory at Stamford Bridge. Their return to the same ground brought another damaging result in a season that has offered little of the consistency shown during Carrick’s earlier spell in charge.
Chelsea punish United after promising first half
United created opportunities before the interval, with Bruno Fernandes and Amad among those unable to convert. Matheus Cunha also had a goal ruled out for offside.
They were punished five minutes into the second half. Romeo Lavia released Rogers, who drove through the visitors’ defence and lifted his finish over Senne Lammens.
Martinez then compounded United’s difficulties. Already booked, the defender challenged Wesley Fofana at a corner, conceding a penalty and receiving his second yellow card following a video review.
Palmer converted the spot-kick to leave United two goals behind and a player short. Our Chelsea vs Manchester United match report covers the decisive incidents.
The defeat follows a 4–1 Champions League loss at Como and last weekend’s 3–0 home reverse against Bournemouth. Across those three games, United have scored once and conceded nine.
Roma next as pressure grows on Carrick
Carrick had been retained for the Chelsea match despite the defeats by Como and Bournemouth. Saturday’s result adds to the scrutiny surrounding his position, but defeat itself does not confirm a managerial change.
Our guide to Michael Carrick’s future at Manchester United covers the background to the club’s decision to keep him in charge.
United’s next fixture is at home to Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday. They then host Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Those matches offer another opportunity to stop the slide. United’s immediate task is to turn the chances they created at Chelsea into goals while avoiding the defensive errors and loss of discipline that left them with another defeat.
