Erica Meg Parkinson made her senior England debut against Greece on Friday, adding an international milestone to a year that has already taken her from Portuguese football to the United States.
The 18-year-old North Carolina Courage midfielder replaced Lauren James in the 86th minute of England’s 3-1 World Cup qualifying play-off victory in Crete.
For supporters meeting her for the first time, there is plenty to catch up on. Parkinson was born in Singapore, developed her game in Portugal and had already represented England across four youth age groups before stepping into Sarina Wiegman’s senior side.
How old is Erica Meg Parkinson?
Parkinson was born on 18 April 2008, making her 18 at the time of her England debut.
Her official England profile lists her as a midfielder and records her birthplace as Singapore.
She received her first senior call-up in March 2026, when she was still 17, ahead of April’s World Cup qualifiers against Spain and Iceland. The Iceland fixture fell on her 18th birthday, although her first appearance would come almost six months later.
From Singapore to Portugal
Parkinson has an English father and a Japanese mother. Her family moved from Singapore to Portugal after her brother Denis was recruited by Porto’s academy.
Speaking to England Football about the move, she explained that football was a major factor, alongside the opportunity to live closer to her father’s family in Britain.
Portugal became the setting for her own progression. She joined Valadares Gaia and signed her first professional contract in 2024, gaining senior experience while continuing through England’s youth teams.
Her upbringing also gave her an interest in languages. In her interview with England Football, Parkinson described speaking English, Japanese, Portuguese and French, with English and Portuguese forming part of her daily life at the time.
Which club does Parkinson play for?
Parkinson now plays for North Carolina Courage in the National Women’s Soccer League.
The American club announced her signing on 1 July, agreeing a contract through the 2029 season with a club option for 2030.
She arrived as a free agent following the expiry of her Valadares Gaia contract. Her eligibility began when the league’s secondary transfer window opened on 14 July, and she made her Courage debut against Bay FC later that month.
There have already been tangible contributions. The club credited Parkinson with her first NWSL assist when she supplied Lauryn Thompson during a 5-0 victory over Orlando Pride.
A further assist followed for Ashley Sanchez in the 6-0 win over Chicago Stars. By September, Courage’s team announcements were regularly naming Parkinson in their midfield, including alongside Shinomi Koyama and Vilde Bøe Risa.
Those appearances give her a platform to develop between England camps. The move has brought first-team responsibility as well as a long-term contract.
What kind of player is she?
England describe Parkinson as a creative midfielder.
Her early Courage contributions offer examples of her involvement in attacking situations: alongside those assists, she won the penalty from which Riley Jackson opened the scoring against Denver Summit in August.
Her recent club selections have placed her within a midfield three. That provides useful context for England supporters assessing where she might fit, although her brief appearance against Greece offers too little evidence to establish her eventual senior international role.
How did she reach the Lionesses?
Parkinson represented England at under-16, under-17, under-19 and under-23 level before receiving her senior opportunity.
She was part of the England teams that reached the European Under-17 Championship final and the Under-17 World Cup semi-finals in 2024.
Her progression continued with an under-23 debut in late 2025. In an interview before her senior breakthrough, she spoke about the encouragement she took from seeing youth team-mates Michelle Agyemang and Katie Reid receive
