Tom Curry is a major doubt for England’s Nations Championship match against Australia after withdrawing from training, with twin brother Ben in contention to start at openside.

The Sale Sharks flanker was stood down from Wednesday’s session at Pennyhill Park, according to The Times.

His availability remains uncertain ahead of Sunday’s match at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham. A start for Ben would mark his first England appearance since July 2025.

Tom Curry injury update: England await selection decision

Curry’s withdrawal creates a potential vacancy in England’s back row, but he has not been confirmed as unavailable for the Australia fixture in the reports checked.

The nature of the problem and a recovery timetable have not been established. His previous injuries should therefore not be treated as an explanation for this latest withdrawal.

Curry has been an important figure for England through successive campaigns, featuring in the 2019 World Cup final, winning the 2020 Six Nations and captaining his country in 2022.

He also brings experience of facing Australia with the British and Irish Lions, having been part of their successful 2025 tour.

Ben Curry in contention for England return

Ben Curry offers Steve Borthwick an experienced alternative after returning to regular club action with Sale.

The 28-year-old endured a difficult 2025-26 season because of a serious hamstring injury. He has since made four Premiership appearances this campaign, starting three, according to RUCK’s account of the selection picture.

Both brothers were included in England’s preparations for the November internationals. Ben’s recent playing time gives him an opportunity to press for a Test return if Tom is unavailable.

However, being in contention does not amount to a confirmed starting place. Borthwick’s team announcement will establish how England intend to balance the back row.

Henry Pollock and Greg Fisilau also in the selection picture

Henry Pollock and Greg Fisilau are further options as England consider their starting combination and replacement forwards.

A six-two split on the bench could create room for both, but that arrangement has not been confirmed. The choice also depends on the cover required elsewhere in the matchday squad.

It would be premature to interpret a possible Ben Curry start as proof of a more defensive game plan. Selection will reflect fitness, combinations and the roles Borthwick wants his replacements to perform.
