Chelsea team news: Caicedo and Martinez face late checks

Xabi Alonso will assess Caicedo after the midfielder reported discomfort following the Manchester United game. His availability remains uncertain ahead of Saturday’s final training session.

Martinez has returned to training wearing protective headgear after jaw surgery. Alonso must determine whether he is ready to return, with Mike Penders having started Chelsea’s last three matches.

Medical clearance to play in the protection does not guarantee selection. Alonso has praised Martinez’s effort to recover ahead of schedule but will make his final choice before the match.

Chelsea’s official injury update confirms that Jorrel Hato, Maxence Lacroix and Joao Pedro will miss the trip. Their recoveries will be reviewed over the international break.

Reece James and Jamie Gittens are also listed as unavailable in the latest match team news. Aaron Anselmino should not be treated as a confirmed absentee solely because he has yet to feature this season: Alonso has said he is back in training.

Sunderland team news: Alderete banned, Mukiele could return

Sunderland will be without Omar Alderete following his red card against Coventry. His suspension increases the importance of Nordi Mukiele’s potential return after concussion.

Régis Le Bris is hopeful Mukiele will be available, although that depends on the final stages of his recovery.

“Nordi should be available. We have no new injuries from last night, which is good news,” Le Bris said, as the Sunderland Echo reported after Thursday’s defeat by Dinamo Zagreb.

Thomas Meunier remains in contention despite coming off at half-time in that game. Le Bris explained that the substitution was planned to manage his workload before Chelsea.

Dan Ballard, Habib Diarra and Romaine Mundle remain unavailable, while Juan Riquelme Angulo is a doubt.

Recent form: Sunderland need a league response

Sunderland have five points from nine league matches and are seeking their first Premier League victory since August. Their recent 3-2 win over Brentford came in the League Cup, rather than the league.

They followed that result with a 3-1 defeat at Coventry and Thursday’s 2-0 home loss to Dinamo Zagreb. Chelsea have had a full week since beating Manchester United.

The visitors’ recent record also needs a distinction between competitions. Their six most recent league results include wins over Bournemouth, Everton and United, but their all-competitions sequence includes the 1-1 draw at Liverpool that ended in a League Cup penalty-shootout defeat.

Our League Cup fourth-round report covers Sunderland’s progress and Chelsea’s exit.

Where Sunderland vs Chelsea could be decided

Analysis: Sunderland’s first task is to stay compact without surrendering their attacking threat. Le Bris has acknowledged that his side have been too exposed, and Alderete’s suspension creates another defensive adjustment.

“We need to be pragmatic first because it is clear if you concede goals it is more difficult to win the game,” he said. “But, at the same time, we need to keep the creativity and the bravery.”

Caicedo’s fitness could influence that balance. If Chelsea are without him, Sunderland may have more opportunity to compete for second balls and disrupt the visitors’ midfield rhythm. That would still require organised pressure rather than players chasing the ball individually.

For Chelsea, the opportunity is to make Sunderland defend repeated attacks without allowing easy counters. Cole Palmer’s movement between midfield and defence could be important, particularly if the hosts’ replacement back line struggles to stay connected.

The early stages matter too. Chelsea’s pre-match statistics show Sunderland have conceded first in seven of their nine league games and have yet to lead at half-time.

More on the home manager’s approach is available in our Le Bris press-conference report.

Sunderland vs Chelsea prediction

Our prediction: Sunderland 0-2 Chelsea.

Chelsea’s attacking options and longer preparation time give them the edge, although the uncertainty over Caicedo and Martinez makes the final team news important.

Sunderland can make the game uncomfortable if they protect the centre and keep the crowd involved. Their difficulty creating a sustained league threat, combined with further defensive disruption, makes an away win the stronger forecast.
