The England fly-half has resumed training after missing the opening two league matches.
Head coach Jason Gilmore told RugbyPass: “Smithy’s our quarterback.”
Gilmore said Smith still needed to get through contact work before returning to play, adding: “So he’s on track at the moment.”
Marcus Smith injury update offers Harlequins hope
Smith injured his finger during a pre-season friendly against Edinburgh.
His potential return comes as Harlequins seek their first league points following defeats by Bath and Gloucester.
The 48-0 loss at Kingsholm prompted Ugo Monye to question Harlequins’ recruitment, with their problems up front coming under scrutiny.
Smith’s availability would restore an important attacking option, although Gilmore’s comments leave his involvement dependent on completing training.
Fin Baxter nearing return
England prop Fin Baxter has also trained with the squad, but Gilmore believes Sunday’s match may come too soon.
The loosehead is recovering from a long-term foot injury, with the following weekend’s Challenge Cup match against Vannes a possible return date.
Tighthead Titi Lamositele is also working towards a comeback after an extended absence with a foot injury.
