Elisabeth Terland scored an 89th-minute equaliser as Manchester United held Manchester City to a 1-1 derby draw, ending the visitors’ six-match winning start in the Women’s Super League.

Khadija Shaw had put City ahead in the 66th minute, but Terland’s late finish at the Progress with Unity Stadium denied them a seventh successive league victory.

Terland delivers after earlier chances

United had opportunities before falling behind. Julia Zigiotti Olme sent Andrea Medina’s first-half pass over the bar, while Jess Park struck the bar from 25 yards after the interval.

Shaw broke through after Mary Fowler played her in. City then had chances to extend their advantage, with Shaw and substitute Grace Clinton unable to finish promising openings.

As City’s official match report records, Terland eventually punished those misses with her finish inside the penalty area.

Chelsea finish the weekend top

The draw leaves City on 19 points, behind Chelsea on goal difference.

Sonia Bompastor’s side had moved ahead earlier on Sunday with their 3-1 comeback victory at Crystal Palace, where Melvine Malard scored twice and Sandy Baltimore added a penalty.

United move to 11 points from seven league matches. Eva Olid’s side had entered the derby after consecutive WSL wins over West Ham, Liverpool and Charlton.

The result also extends United’s unbeaten run to seven matches in all competitions, although it ends their sequence of six victories.

Burnley and Everton next for United

United return to cup action at home to Burnley on Wednesday 28 October before visiting Everton in the WSL on Saturday 31 October, according to the club’s official fixture list.

After coming within minutes of defeat against the defending champions, Olid’s team take a point into that schedule — and Terland’s persistence gives them another result to build on.
