Wesley, Roma defender linked with Manchester United

Man Utd are considering Roma defender Wesley as they look to strengthen at right-back in January, according to a new report.

The Brazil international, 23, is admired by United’s hierarchy, Football Insider reports, with greater depth in the position among the club’s recruitment priorities.

Wesley joined Roma from Flamengo in July 2025 and signed a contract until 2030. The report does not identify a bid or an agreed fee.

Man Utd interest in Wesley amid Dalot scrutiny

Pete O’Rourke’s report links United with a possible January approach following a difficult start to the season for Diogo Dalot.

The Portugal defender remains a regular under Michael Carrick, but his performances have come under scrutiny as United consider changes to their defence.

Speaking on Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, O’Rourke said: “Look, all areas of the defence probably need strengthening for Manchester United right now.”

He also defended Dalot’s commitment and pointed out that the full-back had been used on the left against Roma. United’s interest in Wesley does not establish that Dalot will leave.

Wesley’s route from Flamengo to Roma

Wesley had made more than 100 first-team appearances for Flamengo when Roma announced his arrival on 28 July 2025.

The Italian club described him as a right wing-back. He had already made his senior Brazil debut, appearing in a 2-1 win over Colombia in March that year, and represented Flamengo at the Club World Cup before moving to Europe.

Football Insider credits Wesley with three assists in nine Serie A appearances this season.

Roma contract runs until 2030

Roma confirmed Wesley’s five-year agreement in an update following his signing, leaving the defender with more than three years remaining on his deal when the January window opens.

That gives Roma a strong contractual position should United follow their reported interest with an approach. Whether the Italian club would consider a mid-season sale remains unclear.
