Aaron Wan-Bissaka faces a late fitness test before Aston Villa visit Manchester United, with Matty Cash’s suspension adding urgency to Unai Emery’s decision at right-back.
Wan-Bissaka is nearing a return from a hamstring injury, but Emery wants to assess how he handles Saturday’s training before deciding whether he can feature at Old Trafford.
The latest Aston Villa news also confirms that Matteo Ruggeri and Amadou Onana remain unavailable. Sunday’s Premier League match kicks off at 4.30pm GMT on 8 November.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka injury: Saturday training holds the key
Emery offered encouragement about Wan-Bissaka’s recovery without confirming his place in the squad.
“Aaron is close and tomorrow we’ll see if he’s training normally and feeling good,” he said, in comments reported by BBC Sport’s Villa team-news update.
The defender has missed Villa’s last five matches. A return would give Emery an experienced option against Wan-Bissaka’s former club, but his availability depends on coming through the next session without problems.
That leaves a distinction between being close to fitness and being ready to play. Emery has not confirmed whether Wan-Bissaka could start, make the bench or miss out altogether.
Matty Cash suspension leaves Villa short at right-back
Cash will serve a one-match ban after collecting his fifth league booking of the season in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Fulham.
His absence is confirmed in Manchester United’s official match team news. It means Emery cannot simply retain Cash if Wan-Bissaka is not ready.
Wan-Bissaka’s assessment therefore has an immediate bearing on Villa’s defensive selection. Emery has not announced who will fill the position if the former United defender fails to recover in time.
Aston Villa injury news: Ruggeri and Onana remain out
Ruggeri is making progress but continues to train separately from the group. Onana remains a long-term absentee.
Friday’s injury round-up lists Ruggeri with a hamstring problem and Onana with a knee injury. Neither is available for the trip to Manchester.
| Player | Issue | Status against Man Utd |
|---|---|---|
| Aaron Wan-Bissaka | Hamstring injury | Late fitness test; decision follows Saturday training. |
| Matty Cash | Five league yellow cards | Suspended for one match. |
| Matteo Ruggeri | Hamstring injury | Out; continuing individual training. |
| Amadou Onana | Knee injury | Out; long-term absentee. |
Emery indicated that he expected the other players to be available. That was an update on fitness, however, and does not remove Cash’s suspension.
Manchester United also face selection problems
United will be without Carlos Baleba after the midfielder suffered a hamstring injury during Tuesday’s 3-2 Champions League win over Roma. Lisandro Martínez is suspended following his dismissal against Chelsea.
Patrick Dorgu has resumed limited training and will be assessed before Sunday. His return has not been confirmed.
Our report on Baleba’s injury and United’s midfield options examines the implications for Michael Carrick’s selection.
