Scarlets were level at 26–26 with 56 minutes gone before the home side pulled clear in the final quarter, and Bulls led 19–12 at half-time. It was Scarlets’ second losing bonus point in successive weeks in South Africa, but it leaves them with one win from five United Rugby Championship matches this season and fifteenth in the table going into the international break. Bulls stay unbeaten at home and move up to fifth.

How Scarlets got back to 26–26
Bulls had seemed certain to pull away when Rudolph, Willie le Roux and Dylan Maart all crossed inside the opening half-hour to make it 19–0. Scarlets responded through hooker John McKee and a try from lock Sam Lousi, only the second of which Carwyn Leggatt-Jones converted, to cut the gap to 19–12 at the interval.
Scarlets had two tries ruled out early in the second half, the first by Gareth Davies for offside and the second by Archie Hughes after a TMO review. Stedman Gans was then shown a yellow card for a trip on Josh Macleod, and Hughes scored in the corner to make it 26–21.
Scarlets were level four minutes later. Full-back Ioan Nicholas broke clear and put Joe Roberts over for his fourth try in two matches, though the conversion was missed, leaving the score at 26–26. That was as close as the visitors came.

Where the match went away from Scarlets
Scarlets could not deal with the restart after drawing level, and Bulls went back in front almost immediately through replacement back-rower Coetzee. A second Coetzee try, this one from a rolling maul, followed by scores from de Klerk and Grobbelaar, took the game away from the visitors, and Maart twisted over for his second try late on. Bosch converted seven of the eight.
Scarlets travelled without a number of players on international duty and had others unavailable through injury, and the strain showed as the bench took effect in the closing quarter. Gabe Macdonald and Isaac Murray-MacGregor were making their first United Rugby Championship starts, and Archie Hughes began the match on the wing after a late change.
There were individual performances worth noting in defeat. Joe Roberts has now scored four tries across the two weeks in South Africa, and Fletcher Anderson carried heavily on both sides of the ball. Lousi’s try came at a cost, ending his afternoon through injury, and prop Harri O’Connor was forced off before the half-hour.
