Everton and Man Utd saw out a goalless draw at Goodison Park on Saturday, with Courtney Brosnan denying Elisabeth Terland a late winner in the Women’s Super League.

Terland was stopped from close range after Jess Park’s pass. At the other end, Phallon Tullis-Joyce denied Hannah Blundell and Ornella Vignola, but neither side found a breakthrough, according to the Guardian’s match report.

The point ends Everton’s run of two league defeats and extends United’s unbeaten WSL sequence to five matches.

United struggled to create clear openings for much of the afternoon. The Guardian reports that Simi Awujo’s introduction helped the visitors improve, but Brosnan’s save ensured Everton took a share of the points.

Everton stop their losing run

Scott Phelan’s side had lost successive league matches against London City Lionesses and Aston Villa before Saturday’s meeting.

Both defeats had brought frustration. Everton lost 2–1 at London City, then scored twice late on against Villa without completing a recovery from three goals down, losing 3–2.

A clean sheet against United therefore offered an improvement after Everton had conceded seven times across their previous three WSL fixtures.

The hosts had arrived on the back of a 2–1 midweek win at Sheffield United in the Subway Players Cup. This draw added a league point to that cup success, although their wait for a first competitive victory over United continues. United had never lost to Everton in any competition before Saturday.

United extend unbeaten WSL sequence

Eva Olid again trusted the starting XI that had helped United recover from a winless opening three league matches.

United’s team announcement confirmed an unchanged starting XI for the fifth successive WSL fixture.

That line-up had beaten West Ham, Liverpool and Charlton before drawing 1–1 with Manchester City last weekend. Terland’s late equaliser rescued a point in the derby, but there was no decisive finish from the forward at Goodison.

United made nine changes from Wednesday’s 3–0 cup win over Burnley, with Maya Le Tissier and Andrea Medina the only starters retained.

Le Tissier captained the visitors, while Terland led an attack supported by Park, Ella Toone and Medina.

WSL table: what the result means

Everton are sixth in the WSL table on 10 points from eight league matches, with three wins, one draw and four defeats. United are fourth on 12 points from the same number of games, with three wins, three draws and two defeats. Those positions are as they stand immediately after this match, before Sunday’s fixtures.

For Everton, the result provides a steadier defensive foundation after consecutive league losses. United remain unbeaten in five WSL games, but successive draws have slowed their progress after three straight league victories.
