Thierno Barry scored twice and set up Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall as Everton came from behind to beat Coventry City 3-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Friday night.

Yann Gboho gave Frank Lampard’s visitors the lead early in the second half, but Barry’s quick double overturned the deficit before Dewsbury-Hall secured the points.

The victory lifted David Moyes’ side into fifth place ahead of the rest of the weekend’s Premier League fixtures, with 16 points from 10 matches.

Everton vs Coventry: Barry turns the game around

Coventry threatened before the interval, with Jordan Pickford called into action as the visitors created opportunities. Everton went into the break level but had work to do after an uneven first-half performance.

Gboho broke the deadlock after the restart. Coventry’s advantage proved brief, however, as Barry headed home a Vitaliy Mykolenko cross to draw Everton level.

The striker struck again shortly afterwards to put the hosts ahead. From trailing against a dangerous visiting side, Everton suddenly had the lead and a platform to build on.

Barry’s contribution extended beyond his finishing. He also supplied the assist for Dewsbury-Hall’s late goal, completing a night in which he was involved in all three Everton strikes.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall goal secures the points

Dewsbury-Hall made it 3-1 in the 81st minute with a powerful finish from the left side of the penalty area. A VAR check confirmed the goal stood.

That gave Everton breathing space after a contest in which Coventry had caused problems. Barry later threatened to complete his hat-trick, while the visitors were unable to find a route back.

The result followed Everton’s league victory at Newcastle and gave Lampard a losing return against his former club.

Dibling starts as Branthwaite returns to the line-up

Moyes made one change to the side that won at Newcastle, bringing Tyler Dibling into the starting XI in place of Jake O’Brien.

Jarrad Branthwaite was fit to start after coming off with cramp at St James’ Park. Jack Grealish remained absent, with Tyrique George joining Dibling and Dewsbury-Hall in support of Barry.

Everton’s confirmed team announcement set out the selection before kick-off.

Everton XI: Pickford, Röhl, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko, Garner, Armstrong, Dibling, Dewsbury-Hall, George, Barry.

Coventry XI: Rushworth, Dasilva, Pinnock, Mfuni, Van Ewijk, Torp, Yirenkyi, Sakamoto, Rudoni, Gboho, Awoniyi.

Everton match report: the decisive response

Analysis: Everton’s response to conceding decided the match. Barry supplied the finishing that changed the scoreline, then helped create the third goal as Coventry chased a way back.

For Coventry, the frustration is that their promising spells and opening goal produced no points. They arrived after beating Sunderland 3-1 last weekend, but could not protect their advantage on Merseyside.

Everton now head into the international break with successive league victories. Further results and reaction are available in our Premier League news coverage.
