What happened in Dubois vs Wardley round 1

Wardley entered the first fight as champion. Dubois climbed off the canvas twice, including in the first 20 seconds, before stopping Wardley as the towel came in in round 11. Dubois took the WBO title. It was the first defeat of Wardley’s professional career. BBC Radio 5 Live’s Steve Bunce, who was at ringside, said there was “genuine concern for Wardley’s health” at the end. Wardley has since said the punishment was not as bad as it looked, according to Bunce.

Wardley’s plan and the build-up

Wardley recently said he has an “easy adjustment” to make. He said he was “overconfident in the power I have in my right hand” in the first fight and has worked on pacing the fight “round by round” rather than looking to end it with one punch. He also said he is happy to have a war if Dubois wants one.

Bunce wrote that Wardley’s nose was badly damaged in the first fight and that the cut across its bridge is an old wound that has reopened before. He said he would have liked Wardley to wait longer before a rematch, but added that Wardley “makes a compelling argument” for fighting now.
