De Ligt travels with Man Utd for Atletico Madrid clash

Matthijs de Ligt has travelled with Manchester United for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Atletico Madrid as he continues his recovery from a lengthy injury absence.

The defender appears in United’s official departure gallery, although his involvement in the travelling party does not confirm he will play.

According to The Sun, De Ligt has been sidelined since November last year with a back injury that required surgery.

De Ligt return offers encouragement for United

His presence is an encouraging development for Michael Carrick, whose preparations have included fitness concerns over Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo.

Both missed Monday’s training session, leaving questions over their availability for the trip to Spain. Missing training alone does not establish that either player has been ruled out.

De Ligt’s involvement comes as United seek a response to Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Bryan Mbeumo put Carrick’s side ahead before Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off, but Dominic Solanke equalised in stoppage time to deny United victory against ten men.

When do Man Utd play Atletico Madrid?

United face Atletico at the Metropolitano on Tuesday 13 October, with kick-off at 8pm BST.

The match is live in the UK on Prime Video.

United won their opening Champions League fixture 4-0 against Sabah and will be looking to build on that result in Madrid.
