David Moyes says he only learned of Everton’s potential sale on Friday morning, admitting the development surprised him less than two years after The Friedkin Group took control.
The Everton manager was responding to the owners’ announcement that they are exploring investment options, including selling their controlling interest.
“I only found out this morning myself along with everybody else,” Moyes said at his press conference, as reported by Sky Sports.
His comments follow Everton’s announcement about a possible change of ownership.
Moyes feels for Everton supporters
Moyes said he had expected the owners to remain involved for much longer, although the difficult summer transfer window had given him reason to question their plans.
He explained that his ambition on returning to Everton was to restore the club as a more regular challenger for European qualification.
The manager’s greatest concern was the prospect of supporters enduring another period of uncertainty after a more settled spell.
Asked about his own position, Moyes said he had not yet considered the implications for his future. His immediate focus remains on keeping the players concentrated on results.
What have the Friedkins announced?
The Friedkin Group completed its takeover in December 2024 and subsequently oversaw Everton’s move to Hill Dickinson Stadium.
In its statement, reported by ITV News, the group said it would consider suitable investors capable of building on the club’s progress.
It also pledged continued support throughout the process.
The announcement opens the door to a sale; it does not confirm that a buyer has been selected or a deal agreed.
