Daniel Tupou has announced his retirement from professional rugby league, days after winning his fourth premiership with Sydney Roosters.

The 35-year-old winger finishes with 198 tries in 307 appearances, making him the club’s record try-scorer and second most-capped player.

His final appearance came in Sunday’s 19–18 grand final victory over Newcastle Knights.

“I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and I know the time is right for me to finish playing,” Tupou said in the Roosters’ announcement.

Daniel Tupou ends 15-season Roosters career

Tupou made his NRL debut against Canberra Raiders in 2012 and spent his entire first-grade career with the Roosters.

He scored in their 2013 grand final victory over Manly before adding premierships in 2018, 2019 and 2026. He also helped the club win three World Club Challenges.

Coach Trent Robinson praised his consistency, dependability and contribution beyond his individual records.

Tupou thanked his family, team-mates and the club’s staff, paying particular tribute to Robinson’s influence throughout his career.

His representative career included internationals for Tonga and Australia, alongside 10 State of Origin appearances for New South Wales between 2014 and 2022.

He was also part of the Tonga team that defeated Australia in 2019, a landmark result for the Pacific nation.

Tupou leaves the Roosters having reached the 300-game milestone during his final season.
