Cristiano Ronaldo says he remains available for Portugal after apologising for leaving the national squad and accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of breaking promises over his involvement.

The 41-year-old published his account on Tuesday, saying he would accept punishment from the Portuguese Football Federation but still wanted to represent his country.

Jesus confirmed on Wednesday that he had read the statement, declining to discuss the accusations further.

Cristiano Ronaldo explains Portugal departure

Ronaldo left the camp before Portugal’s Nations League match against Denmark after remaining an unused substitute in the 2-1 victory away to Norway.

In his statement, reported by Sky Sports, Ronaldo claimed Jesus had told him he would play for 30 minutes against Norway.

He said a subsequent agreement for the coach to explain the situation publicly also went unfulfilled.

Jesus had previously denied making an agreement with Ronaldo and said the door remained open for his return.

Ronaldo apologised to supporters for not acknowledging them after the Norway game and to his team-mates for leaving the camp.

He said his position as captain made his actions more serious and that the federation should assess the consequences.

Jesus responds to Ronaldo statement

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday morning, Jesus said he had read Ronaldo’s account and would continue focusing on his work with Portugal, according to Portuguese broadcaster RTP.

Ronaldo said he had prepared a retirement message after the World Cup but reconsidered following discussions with the federation.

He remains willing to return if fit and playing for his club, once any suspension imposed on him has been served.
