Mike Penders will start Chelsea’s Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool despite his costly mistake in Saturday’s defeat by Tottenham, Xabi Alonso has confirmed.

The 21-year-old goalkeeper scored an own goal on his first Premier League start as Chelsea lost 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Alonso has nevertheless made clear that he will keep his place for the trip to Anfield.

“We keep confidence in Mike and he will be in goal against Liverpool,” Alonso said in comments published on Chelsea’s official website.

The fourth-round tie takes place on Wednesday 28 October, with Chelsea confirming an 8pm UK kick-off.

Penders retains Alonso’s backing after derby mistake

Penders’ error broke the deadlock in the 77th minute against Tottenham. Attempting to clear Mateus Fernandes’ corner under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke, he punched the ball into his own net.

Cole Palmer was subsequently sent off before Mathys Tel added Tottenham’s second, completing a damaging final spell for Chelsea. Our Chelsea–Tottenham match report covers the decisive incidents.

Alonso’s response placed responsibility on the wider team. As the Standard reported from his post-match press conference, the Chelsea head coach stressed that the squad must support Penders and improve collectively.

Martínez’s absence leaves Penders with an extended opportunity

Penders has stepped in for Emiliano Martínez, who underwent jaw surgery after being injured against Everton.

Before the Tottenham match, Alonso said Martínez would be out for a few weeks. Chelsea have not announced a precise return date.

Penders had already featured in cup matches before replacing Martínez during the Everton win. Wednesday’s selection therefore continues his involvement in the competition as well as his current spell deputising in goal.

Chelsea will be without Palmer at Anfield. The Premier League has confirmed that his one-match suspension will be served against Liverpool following his two bookings against Tottenham.

Our Palmer suspension explainer sets out why the ban applies to the cup tie and will not cost him a Premier League appearance.
