Cole Palmer will miss Chelsea’s Carabao Cup trip to Liverpool after his red card against Tottenham, but the suspension will not rule him out of their next Premier League match.
The Premier League has confirmed that Palmer’s automatic one-match ban will be served at Anfield on Wednesday 28 October.
Chelsea’s fourth-round tie kicks off at 8pm UK time, as confirmed in the club’s fixture information.
Why Palmer’s ban applies to the Liverpool game
Red-card suspensions carry across the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup. Liverpool is Chelsea’s next domestic fixture, so that is the match Palmer must sit out.
The distinction is between a dismissal and an accumulation of yellow cards across separate matches. Premier League bans for accumulated bookings are served in that competition; a sending-off carries different rules.
Palmer received two bookings against Tottenham, triggering the one-match suspension confirmed by the league.
What happened against Tottenham?
Palmer was initially booked following an altercation with Mateus Fernandes. He then received a second yellow card for a challenge on former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.
His dismissal came shortly after Mike Penders’ own goal had put Tottenham ahead. Mathys Tel subsequently scored to complete the visitors’ 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, as detailed in the Guardian’s match report.
The incident left Chelsea chasing the derby with ten men and now removes Palmer from Xabi Alonso’s options for the cup tie.
Does Palmer miss a Premier League game?
No. The Premier League’s published update explicitly states that this suspension will not cost Palmer a league appearance.
For Fantasy Premier League managers, the red card therefore does not create a suspension-related absence in the next gameweek. Eligibility, however, does not guarantee selection.
Alonso must now prepare for Liverpool without Palmer as Chelsea seek a place in the quarter-finals. The EFL’s confirmed fourth-round schedule lists the Anfield tie for Wednesday evening.
