Van Gerwen faces ranking pressure with £250,000 to defend at World Championship

Michael van Gerwen faces pressure on his world ranking as he prepares to defend the £250,000 earned from reaching the 2025 World Championship final.
The Dutchman remains ninth following the World Grand Prix, where Ryan Joyce knocked him out in the first round.
However, his position could become more vulnerable when that Alexandra Palace prize money drops out of the PDC’s rolling two-year calculation.
Why Van Gerwen’s ranking is under pressure
The Order of Merit updated after the World Grand Prix lists Van Gerwen on £608,500.
That puts him £71,250 ahead of Chris Dobey in 17th, with Jermaine Wattimena occupying the final top-16 position on £547,750.
Those figures describe the current standings. They do not establish where Van Gerwen will finish after the next World Championship.
As talkSPORT explains, his total still includes the £250,000 he collected as runner-up to Luke Littler in January 2025.
Van Gerwen can add ranking money before and during the next championship. His rivals will also have earnings to defend, so simply subtracting £250,000 from his current total would give an incomplete picture.
An early exit would leave him with less money to replace that previous run, increasing the risk of losing ground.
For the three-time world champion, the closing months of the season carry significance beyond another attempt to win at Alexandra Palace.
